I have been viewing the arctic cam for many many years to check out the Fairbanks weather. My daughter, son-in-law and 7 month old grandson live on Moose Mt. One day, within the past year, I discovered the blog and have been reading and enjoing it ever since. Right now I am visiting and doing some babysitting. The view is fantastic and I love the days when the mountains are out on the southern horizon. I've been very lucky in that regard, this trip. My question is: how long has the arctic cam included the blog? About 4 or 5 years ago I stopped in at the News Miner and thanked the nice folks for having the cam. I've enjoyed it and I now enjoy reading the comments and learning where the other viewers are from.

flapalms - re: Skagway... please don't confuse it with the real Alaska. A friend just passed through there on the way into the Yukon. Her family had been to Disneyland this Spring and their 4-year old had loved that amusement park. When they were in Skagway, with the crowds of people, all the false-fronted buildings, store after store of duty-free jewelery, and tour guides dressed up in old-time clothes, the kiddo was quiet until they stopped to rest on a bench along main street. He sighed heavily and very seriously said to his grandmother "Nana, dis crazy place not Disneyland. Is Skagland - no mouse." And that is a very accurate description of Skagway - Alaskan Disneyland with out the mouse. . .

The train trip is very scenic, however.

    Javagra,
An average farm in Iowa could be around 400 - 500 acres.
An average farm in S.D. could be around 2000 acres.
An average farm in N.D. could be around 3000 acres.
Sometimes a farmer will rent land to increase his total acreage. Farmland in Iowa cost more per acre to buy or rent.

I checked out Festival Fairbanks web cam since the Artic Cam wasn't working.

if you stay up real late at night in september you might see the northern lights. nothing like you'll see in december or january though.

hey daminihouse, every time i've gone to pike's for brunch there has been sausage. i agree, you have to have sausage and or bacon at brunch. don't need a salad, or the desert cart for that matter at brunch. i've tried the regency, it IS cheaper, but i think the quality is not quite that of pike's. the regency is a bit easier for us to get to too.

The Turtle Club is a MUST. The prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes and salad bar to are all to die for! Only wish I had more room to eat more and more. Got a laugh at the dogs who wait in the parking lot for handouts. Don't worry, they're very gentle and don't really bother anyone. Heck, who can blame them for looking for those leftovers. Needless to say, they didn't stand a chance of getting any of my "doggie bag". Went to the Pike's Landing brunch and it was great...so attractively set up and a wide variety of food. Nice location too....

sorry to disappoint you but you will not be able to see the northern lights anytime in Alaska in August or September..the sun is still out late and it is not dark enough to see them until wintertime. So plan another trip up in the winter so you can enjoy them!

Woodshavings51, there are indeed many wonderful and entertaining things to do in and around Fairbanks, but with respect to iluvak, I must disagree on the worth of Chena Hot Springs. The Chena Hot Springs road alone is worth the drive; there is a fair probability of seeing moose, and there are several excellent places to camp, fish and hike. The resort itself is certainly overpriced, and the staff is underpaid and overworked, but the rooms were reasonably clean when my family and I have stayed there, and the staff helpful. We have used the Hot Springs pools dozens of times, but have only lodged there in the winter. In the summer we usually camp somewhere on CHS road, spend our days hiking, fishing, and rockhounding, then end the day with a soak in the CHS pools. You can use the pools without staying at the hotel, but even the pool soaking alone is expensive. It helps to remember that you are close to the edge of true bush Alaska; everything is more expensive about operating a business in such a place. The owner is an Alaskan businessman, not a foreign corporation, and just like Princess Tours he expects to make money. The CHS buildings are not sparkling and new like the Princess operation, but the history of the place has a value for me. The pioneers that constructed many of the cabins in the area were not building to the Princess code. My recommendation is that if you like to hike, make a day trip out of hiking as much of the Granite Tors trail as you care to take on. After the hike motor on out to the resort; it costs nothing to check it out. If it is not to your liking, all the hotels in Fairbanks have hot running water to soak the trail weariness off your muscles. Beware, though; after a day of scrambling around on the area ridges, that outdoor hot spring pool can look mighty inviting.

Regards to all in the ArcticCam community!

Chef Brooks does do a pretty good job, but I don't like the fact that there isn't any bacon or sausage at that buffet, ..I mean it IS BRUNCH after all. Also Pike's doesn't have any type of salad bar and the dessert table is a bigger at Pump House :) and I feel as though I receive better service at Pump House too..also try Regency Brunch, its pretty cheap and the service there is amazing. They make omlettes to order for you and bring them to your table! (And Regency serves prime rib @ brunch too!)

Hello Fairbanks from the State of Maine! I've been watching this site for several months and enjoy hearing about your trips and info on the area. I fell in love with Fairbanks when we were there in '99. You have many good ideas about where to go but I think one of the best is the Aurorium in Ester, just outside Fairbanks. Leroy Zimmerman's photos of the aurora are breathtaking! Since the aurora is not visable in the summer, this is a perfect way of treating yourself to the spectacular sights not often seen in the lower 48. The evening at his theater was one of the highlights of our entire trip. Don't forget to check out his website.
It's 89 deg and humid here today - Wish I Was in Fairbanks!

Pikes Landing is a great restaurant-dont get me wrong but there are definetly better places to have brunch..I go out to brunch almost every week here in fairbanks and pikes is not one of the better ones..Pikes has a great deck to have dinner on, but for brunch you might want to head to The Pump House. They have a better set-up and more of a variety. Some other dinner favorites are The Turtle Club (best prime rib dinner in town and salad bar!), Lavelle's Bistro (downtown), and The Vallata. Enjoy!

When my husband and I visited(6-07), well my husband was born in Fairbanks, but it was my first visit. We flew into Anchorage and drove up the Parks Hwy to Fairbanks. his brother and Uncle lives in Fairbanks so we had family time.
We went to Pioneer Park (Alaska Land),UAF Museum, Santa Claus house in North Pole (I'm a nut about Christmas) had presents shipped to the kids back home and they stamped Merry Christmas all over it and it was in June, my oldest son is in the Navy and all the other Sailors picked on him a little while for that one...hahaha
We took 1200 pictures...we drove everywhere. There are places that I did'nt get to visit like the Pipeline, Tok, Eagle, Fox, Chena Hot Springs,
OH, one place I enjoyed was Pike's Landing they had the best Breakfast/Brunch on Sunday...YUMMM... gotta go there and the Salmon Bake, funny I'm allergic to salmon but they have very good prime rib.
Just take lots and lots of pictures. Have Fun, Wish I were back in Fairbanks and not L.W. Florida

Feb 24 2007 We took the tour to the Artic with Northern Alaska tour company 1 800 474 1986, they are by the air port. It was great. Being in the winter we stopped and slid down a hill, you can tell we are from the south. On our way back we stopped to see the northernlights. They served us dinner it was great. If you have a chance to go again, in the winter there is a lot to do. Chena hotsprings is wonderful. We went into the water and it was -40 outside snow every where. Didn't get cold and couldn't believe it.
We were also there in June 2006 so much wildlife in the summer wonderful time. LUV TO GO AGAIN
Be sure and go to the North pole to see Santa Claus. The town is Christmas all year long. Do your shopping early. SOOOOOOOOOO much more.

We left Missouri this morning and took a brief detour into Kansas City. My husband had to to go Cabella's to show the kids the animal displays.

We then headed north into Iowa. It seemed to be endless acres of farm land there. I told my husband I wondered how many acres one man farmed.

We finally ented South Dakota. We are staying the night in Souix Falls. Tomorrow we will head west again.

I'm in the process of planning my next trip to Fairbanks - probably Aug/Sep 2010. I need to know about a few things in terms of scheduling to help with zeroing in on the Fairbanks leg of what may be a three week trip to Alaska:

    1. Is the Denali drive/road lottery a specific week of the year . . . as in the four days after Labor Day . . . or the week after Labor Day . . . or is there no rhyme or reason to the scheduling on a year to year basis?

    2. When do most of the tourist attractions in and around Fairbanks close for the season . . . to include the Discovery Boat and the gold mine/dredge # (whatever number it is)?

    3. Can you fish the Chena River for Kings into August or are they on a similar schedule as the Kenai and other rivers below Anchorage?

Anything in particular we should consider in planning in terms of August vs. September other than the improbability of seeing the aurora in August due to long daylight hours?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and input :)

They do a great job. You get to pan for gold and also learn about the ways to search for it. Another favorite port for me is Skagway. Be sure to read up on the history. If the cost isn't way out of line, the helicopter flight on to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau is absolutely breathtaking. It is quite pricey however.

flapalms...........my husband and I and 4 friends just returned from a 2 week vacation in AK. We booked a Holland America Cruise/Tour. It was FANTASTIC!!! Flew into Fairbanks and spent two nights there, on to Denali for two nights, Anchorge for one night, then Seward for a night. Got the ship (Zanndam) in Seward, cruised through Galcier Bay, stopped in Haines, Juneau, and Ketchikan. Lots of excursions included in the price and many more you can book for an extra fee. We had the time of our lives!! I can't say enough about how wonderful the people of AK were or how wonderful the scenery and wildlife were. We would all go back in a minute if we could. We had heard that HA cruises usuallly cater to an "older" crowd and we found that to be true...........I would say most people over 50.....very few children............although they do have activities scheduled for children if they are on board. Suggestion: whatever trip you decide to go on......try to manage both land and cruise to get the most out of AK. Also, take a trip that begins on land with the ship part last. The cruise is so very relaxing after changing hotels every night or two on land! Good luck ad book early.

    http://www.123-cams.com/live-webcam.php?...

Here’s the link to the satellite view:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&cl...

For the satellite view click on the tab directly on the map that reads “satellite” and then click on the scale button (third from the top) to get down to street level. The church is easy to locate because of its distinctive blue roof (with the shadow of the steeple).

Grandmapa.....Hi! I was stationed at Murphy Dome in the '60s. Was not thrilled with the assignment at the time. There were 30+ buildings there & about 250 Air Force and Army personnel. The views can be spectacular, with Mt. McKinley visible at a range of 154 miles. It can certainly be a spectacular place to have a wedding.

    Hi Grandmapa,
I live on the outside of Clymer, PA which is located in Indiana County. What part of PA are you from? I have never been to Alaska, but allow me to assure you that if I ever get there, I will not be leaving there! (except to visit family!) Your son and daughter in law are lucky to live there! Lucky ducks! LOL. That was nice you where able to make it there for the birth of your grand daughter. Have a great day!

I'm in PA too and miss Fairbanks. . .Where are you in Pa? My son and daughter-in-law and baby granddaughter live off the grind in Fairbanks - We went up for their wedding in 20006 and hiked up Murphy Dome for the ceremony. My husband and I fell in love with Alaska. I went back up for 3 weeks in 2007 for the birth of my granddaughter.

TNTmedic - I did not realize until now that you are the great author of the blog I have been reading - Moose Nuggets. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about your day to day activity since moving up to Alaska. My husband and I are flying into Fairbanks on the 24th of August, a day prior to when our land/cruise tour starts. I cannot wait.

I have learned SO much since I have been reading the Newsminer blog - this is a must see/read site for all of those traveling to Fairbanks. I am excited about visiting your town and standing in front of the Newsminer and waving to all. You are blessed to live in a town that has so many proud residents.

    Talk to ya'all later.

Wow Polarmark that was fast! Thanks for responding so quickly.

After reading about these winds I find that they originate off the Pacific coast. We here in Southern California call them Santa Anas (devil winds). Just kidding I know they are not the same.

Since my friends does not have internet that far out on CHSR she ask me to see what I could find out. So thank you so much for your answer.

no, i don't think those were chinook winds. chinooks are warm dry winds that come down the sides of mountains.... or they start out on the other side of mountains as cool and wet, lose their moisture as they rise then, warm up and really dry out going down the other side. i forget what the adiabatic lapse rate is (is it 2 degrees per 1000 feet?) but i know the air is much warmer and drier than what they start out as (air warms faster going down than they cool going up). i'm thinking only the alaska range is high enough in this region to provide this effect.

Hello. I have a question for the Newsminer Staff or anyone else who may know.

I have a friend who lives off Chena Hot Springs Road at the 50 mile marker. Last Thursday,Friday and Saturday ( that would be 7/3, 7/4 and 7/5) she said a wind came up and lasted three days. She was wondering if that was Chinook Winds.

I have heard of these winds but not until I googled them did I really understand what they were. Very interesting.

    Thanks.

Liz- thanks for checking the blog! I try to update every couple days. Mon-Thurs kind of get neglected, since hubby is usually home those days.
Had another moose on the loose in the yard yesterday, this time, she seemed pretty upset and nervous. Maybe it was cutting down the trees in the yard that did it? Or maybe the smoke, since about the same time the smoke rolled into North Pole, the birds started freaking out, too.

Can't wait for the duck races next weekend... have to see if I can drag some of our new friends, or Beans and I will be going downtown "solo".

I see that I am . Was there last year for the first time and this coming friday I'll be back in Alaska again. This year I won't make to Fairbanks - be spending most of my time in Homer and on the Sterling Highway sight seeing and fishing. My 85year old mother is coming with me and we are even going on an over night double limit halibut charter boat. Oh,ya we are from Phx. Az. we have packed are cold weather coats and rain gear.Last year I flew into Anchorage and bought a car to drive home . I have wanted to drive the Alaskan Highway for a long time and I did it last year. It was great, long but, great. The car that iI bought was an older one but really nice it ran wonderful.I was going to sell that car when I got home but it is such a nice car I have kept it.

Regarding auto rentals. A consideration must be given to the fact that many more road miles in Alaska are unpaved. That being said, most rental agencies have restrictions regarding use of their vehicles on unpaved roads. Driving on unpaved roads dramatically increases the likelihood of damage (including tires) from stones & the like.

read this article about the smoke
    http://newsminer.com/news/2008/jul/05/sm...

i think on average 3 million acres a year burn here in alaska. many of these fires they don't bother to fight because they are out in the wilderness and are quite a natural phenomena.

    Hi everyone,

I have just booked my trip to Fairbanks from Australia. I met some people in Australia last year from Fairbanks and they've been asking me to come and visit. I never thought I'd get there because of finances, but I've finally done it! I arrive on August 17 and leave on August 29. I can't wait!!! I have been watching this website for 12 months, and love it. Thanks News-Miner!
Has anyone got any ideas about what I should see while I'm there etc. The second week, I'll be by myself touring Fairbanks and Anchorage. Does anyone know of any good cheap accommoation in Anchorage, or Fairbanks as I have no idea? Thanks so much

Kanolee, I had a strange experience with the car rental at the airport in Fairbanks. It was about 1am in the morning when I was given the keys to my car.The girl then gave me a diagram of the car that supposedly showed where all the dents/dings were and said if there were any more on there that weren't on the diagram I was to come back to the counter and tell them. And if they found any on there that was not on the diagram, I would be responsible for them and proceeded to almost give me the riot act. I was speechless!! I've rented many a car at the airport but have never had anything like this happen to me. By the way, there WAS a ding on the hood that wasn't on the diagram, but at 1am I wasn't about to walk back up there. This was the first wk in June. So far, I haven't heard anymore from them.
