BOATING

Just in time for breakup, Salcha Marine is offering a free U.S. Coast Guard safety inspection on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“It’s a complete vessel inspection so they’re in compliance (with Coast Guard regulations),” Eric Fowler said. “We’ll check their lights, horn, flare device, life vests, throw rings, fire extinguisher ... all their safety equipment.”

Just show up with your boat at the shop, which is located at Mile 325 of the Richardson Highway, just south of the Salcha River bridge.

GUNS

The Tanana Valley Sportsman’s Association will be holding its spring gun and sport show on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center. Hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Part of the proceeds from the gun show help support the NCAA championship UAF rifle team. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

Call 457-1376 for more information.

FISHING

The deadline to remove ice fishing houses from lakes in the northern region is April 30, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced this week. An ice fishing house must be removed before that date or the person who registered the ice house will face a possible fine.

With recent warm weather melting lake ice and causing overflow, the department said fishermen would be wise to move their ice houses sooner rather than later before the ice become unsafe.

Contact sport fish information officer Nancy Sisinyak at ADF&G in Fairbanks at 459-7346 if you have questions.

CYCLING

Looking for a good deal on a bike?

The Fairbanks Cycle Club will be holding its 22nd annual bike swap on May 3 at Beaver Sports on College Road.

Sales are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the awning by the Paddle Sports Center. People with items to sell can check them in from 8-10 a.m. Unsold equipment and/or cash from sales should be picked up at 2 p.m.

For more information: 455-4498.

RETRIEVERS

The Fairbanks Retriever Club and the American Kennel Club is hosting a AKC hunt test seminar for handlers and judges on May 3 in the Girl Scout building at 431 Old Steese Highway.

Participants will learn all about AKC hunt tests directly from an AKC instructor during the all-day (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) seminar.

Registration is $30 in advance or $35 at the door and includes morning snacks. Lunch is not provided.

This is an indoor classroom seminar, so no dogs are allowed. To register, download the registration form and mail it in. You can also register and pay via Paypal using our online registration. Walk-ins will be accepted, but preregistration is preferred.
