Forum offers information on digital TV conversion

Published Tuesday, August 26, 2008

FAIRBANKS — Find out more about the national conversion to digital television at a forum at 12 p.m. Thursday at the Noel Wien Public Library in Fairbanks.

At midnight on Feb. 17, U.S. television stations will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to digital in order to free airwaves for emergency responders and advanced wireless services.

Older televisions not equipped to handle digital signals will require a converter box.

Federal Communications Commission head Robert McDowell will speak about the transition.

Commission staff are hosting forums in markets where at least 15 percent of households rely solely on over-the-air TV signals.

More about the conversion can be found online at www.fcc.gov.

Does this apply only to watching TV programming? Or does it affect the ability to watch VCR movies on a TV?
