Work planned for road through Denali National Park

Published Wednesday, August 27, 2008

FAIRBANKS — Federal transportation officials have scheduled a rehabilitation project for the western end of Denali Park Road, which it reports has had fewer safety improvements since the road was constructed in the 1930s, than any other stretch.

The project will focus on rebuilding the road from mileposts 80 to 84, right about where the park’s landscape changes from “rolling terrain” to “rugged canyons” and the character of the road follows suit, according to the National Park Service.

The government will develop an environmental assessment for the rehab project, which will focus on strengthening the road’s edges, formalizing pullouts and adding surface material, this fall.

Park officials will hold a public meeting at 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Murie Science and Learning Center at Mile 1.3 Denali Park Road to discuss the project.

They are holding the public meeting at the Park in the late afternoon on a Wednesday normal work day? That means anyone with an opinion on this project needs to take a half day off from work, spend over $150 in gas, plus the cost of dinner in Healy - just to voice an opinion? Might as well be hosted at the summit of Denail mountain. Why doesn't the Park Service just come out an say public opinion is not welcome on this project........... rather than hide behind a logistical nightmare for anyone to comment or attend?
