Women’s right to vote celebrated

FAIRBANKS — Tuesday marked the 88th anniversary of the constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote, and in celebration of the historic event, the League of Women Voters of Tanana Valley and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Libraries are sponsoring a free film to be shown Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Noel Wien Library auditorium.
The nonpartisan League of Women Voters, formed when women were first granted the right to vote, will mark this occasion with reflections on how far women have come as well as optimism that this year will bring even more Americans into the democratic process.
“This election year has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of new voters, especially women, young people and minorities, registering to vote,” said League of Women Voters of Tanana Valley President Meg Nordale. “There is a tremendous sense of excitement and energy driving this election.”
“Right now, the league is working with several organizations specifically dedicated to reaching out to these rising populations of new voters, making sure that everyone is prepared for (the presidential election) Nov. 4.”

Is that all? A free film? Where are the balloons, popcorn, cake/ice cream, drinks? A skit with women showing 88 years would have been something to see. Fashion show with politics ----
The work the League of Women Voters does is amazing. I'd go so far as to say there is not a more active group in Fairbanks working to inform voters and support the democratic process.
But, why spend time celebrating something that happened 88 years ago when there is so much more work to be done toward fostering equality among all U.S. citizens?
I know my grandfather didn't think women voting was a good idea, but his side lost the election! Barefoot and in the kitchen still seems like a good idea.{a joke?}
