Las Vegas man dies in motorcycle crash on Elliott Highway

Published Thursday, August 28, 2008

FAIRBANKS — A Las Vegas man has died in a motorcycle crash on the Elliott Highway in Alaska’s interior.

Alaska State Troopers say 64-year-old Donald A. Cornell died at the scene of the crash near 65 Mile Elliott Highway.

Troopers say the accident occurred Wednesday evening when Cornell’s motorcycle struck the rear of a motorcycle driven by 61-year-old Daniel Vanderhorstof, also of Las Vegas.

Troopers say Vanderhorstof had been turning right to get off the northbound highway lane when his motorcycle was hit.

Both men were thrown off their motorcycles, which ended up on their sides. Troopers estimate each had been traveling at about 25 mph.

Both drivers were wearing helmets and Vanderhorstof was not hurt.

Just curious--isn't a "motorcycle rash" something you might get in a motorcycle crash?

Come on. There is a time for humor and it is not when a death is reported. I am sure this man had many loved ones who will miss him and grieve over his death.

I agree with "Woodman" - my heart goes out to this man's family and friends, I drive the Elliot & Haul Road for my job and passed by the scene of this accident as it was being investigated yesterday, it was a beautiful day and I imagine this person was out enjoying it and the beauty of Alaska, once again, my heart goes out to him and his family and friends

Wow dead from a 25 mph crash. Goes to show anything can happen. My condolences to friends and family. At least it seems he was doing what he enjoyed.

I am a long time friend of the deceased, Don Cornell, here in Las Vegas. To the last 3 posters, thank you for your comments and condolences. I was one of his three friends who was asked to inform Don's wife of his death, and I can assure you all that his family and friends are intensely grieving. Don was a highly experienced and safe rider-the reasons for this freak accident will likely never be known. It was Don's dream to ride the Alcan, and at least he fulfilled it before his untimely demise. Both Dan and Don started this adventure together, and tomorrow they both will be fying home together, but only Dan will be able to walk off the plane. Dan has told us about how well the folks in Fairbanks have treated him, and how they have helped him deal with the aftermath of this tragedy. To "justasking", I know you meant no ill will in your thoughtless remark, and it is just unfortunate that you will never know of the great sacrifices and signiicant contributions Don made for and to this great nation during his adult lifetime, and what a great individual he was. Thanks also to the Newsminer for the privilege of allowing comments.

Never disrespect death, no one escapes it. With everything you
may have, it will not be buried with you.
