Obama concerns

Published Thursday, August 28, 2008

To the editor:

Regarding Lillian Corti’s letter of Aug. 22, 2008, concerning Dennis Forslund’s letter about Barack Obama.

I, too, read Forslund’s letter and I did not interpret it the same as she. Forslund did not imply that people come to America, just so they could pack heat (guns). They move here to enjoy all the freedoms as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution!

I wish Corti would define reasonable and common sense gun control. There are already hundreds, if not thousands of gun control laws on the books, either through local, state and federal agencies, that law-abiding citizens adhere to! How many of those laws were broken by the gang-bangers in the shoot-out along College Road that Corti refers to?

There are other issues with Sen. Obama that concern me greatly besides just his anti-Second Amendment stance. He may say he supports the Second Amendment, but his voting history proves otherwise. Here is a man who wants to lead this country as president, but, at one time, he stopped wearing the American flag pin on his lapel. He has been photographed without his hand over his heart during the national anthem.

He recently had a $500,000 upgrade done on his 757 jet and had the American flag replaced with his campaign logo. It was noted on Rush Limbaugh’s show a while ago that Obama stated that he would campaign in all 57 states. Coincidentally, there are 57 Islamic states. Or did Obama just commit a Freudian slip?

Barack Hussein Obama. Three Muslim/Islamic names. As a youngster he attended a Muslim school. And as anyone that knows about the Muslim/Islamic religion, if you don’t believe what they teach, you are an infidel and some believe that infidels should be eliminated.

Sen. Obama — very little time in the Senate and no military experience whatsoever. Sen. McCain has over 20 years in the Senate and military experience and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. McCain gets my vote.

You had my interest until you mentioned Rush Limbaugh. He is not what one would call a reliable and neutral source. Whether Barack did or didn't place his hand over his heart is not an indication of his patriotism. Look around at any event you go to and most people no longer show proper respect to the flag. These days it's mostly just military and prior military who salute the flag. As far as being a Muslim, that has been disproven repeatedly. He also attended Catholic school while living in Indonesia, the same place he attended a "Muslim" school. Does that make him a Priest? The "Muslim" school in question was muslim only in the sense that most of the kids in the school were muslim, since that is the major religion in Indonesia. If you are going to write a letter to the editor, do your own research and get your facts straight. Don't just regurgitate the half truths of radio commentators with their own agenda. As for the lapel pin, what a load of crap. I challenge everyone to watch c-span and count the number of flags you see being worn by anyone. If you don't want to vote for Obama, that's your right, but you should base that decision on fact, not rumors, lies, and unnuendo.

Oh, I forgot, there are actually 60 muslim states. 57 member states, and three observer states. And Obama said he had campaigned in 57 states, and had one to go. That would make 58. Watch the video for yourself and make your own determination of whether or not it was a slip of the tongue. You can read the story and view the video at snopes.com

Neither choice seems appealing at this point.

However, the whole hand over the heart thing during the pledge or who wears their flag pin the most is such a load of crap. I simple google search and 5 minutes of reading and watching videos is a good staring point.

Obama's apparent lack of patriotism, although troubling, isn't reason enough to not vote for him.

There's reason enough in other places. His lack of experience for starters. What has he accomplished? What major organization or company has he ever run? Has he been the mayor of a big city or governor of a state? What major pieces of legislation has he introduced and had passed into law? The man has absolutely no experience. What qualifies him to run this country?

His association with the likes of William Ayers (co-founder of the radical group Weather Underground), Frank Marshall Davis (secret CPUSA member) and Rev. Jeremiah Wright are very troubling. Very troubling indeed.

McCain supporters, take note, your use of the "Muslim" conspiracy does not work. If anything it is working against you. You are not talk show hysteria mongers that are in it for the money they make and entertainment factor. Do your candidate a favor start informing people about McCain's policies verses Obama's policies.

As to the qualifications argument, it also falls flat. The constitution spells it out clearly:

Age and Citizenship requirements - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

That's it. I seem to remember when I was a kid everyone was told, "even YOU can grow up to be president!"

My question is-- Is Obama from Africa? I thought his parents were black and white? so isn't he just an American? The newsmedia is saying the first African-American, how can they say that? He isn't.
I want everyone to be very aware that he is against the second amendment and if you take a look at the prices of guns and ammo you see it is going up.
With the gangs in Fairbanks, arm yourselves! The criminals will have guns and I have the right to own and protect myself and family! Obama and Biden don't believe that. But doesn't Obama have armed security with him at all times? Hmmm.

patriotism has everythig to do with it shows love of and loyalty to are country ! taking the United States flag off his campain jet and replacing it with his own symbol is a funny way of showlng it ! he is suppose to be a patriot to us as citizens of the U.S.A. What I see Obama is trying to do is separate us from are patriotism for are country ! . If he does that it will make his socialism projects easier to do . So where is his patriotism he hasn't shown it to me.!!!!!!!

He did not take the US flag off of his jet. If you look at before and after pictures, the image he removed was the trademarked corporate logo of North American Airlines, the company that owns the aircraft his campaign is leasing.

Incidentally, where is the flag on McCain's jet? Oh, that's right. There isn't one. He must be a communist, too, right?

I am afraid that people are going to get caught up in the eloquence of Obama's words. He is probably one of the best speakers of modern day history, but that won't make him a good Commander and Chief. That is the job title he is applying for... not Speach Maker!

I have too many good friends leaving in a few weeks to go over and fight. Whether you believe in this war or not, the reasons it started, or the way it has been fought thus far... that shouldn't matter. The next Commander and Chief needs to support our military and love this country more than anything. I just don't think that Obama does either.

Obama has never worn the uniform of our Armed Forces nor our security services; he has neve taken training in combat arms; yet, he promises to escalate hostilities in Afghanistan and possibly invade Pakistan if it serves U.S. interests. Can we call him a chickenhawk, now?

Obama promises to transfer ownership of the federal government even moreso into the pockets of the wealthy by raising their taxes and reducing the obligation of paying for government on the middle class by reducing their taxes. Of course the poor don't pay income, social security, and medicare taxes and are subsidized by those who do pay taxes. Is it any wonder that the wealthy feel they own government? Afterall, they pay for it.

Obama promises to spend $1,000,000,000,000 more in federal entitlement programs.

Obama, a former part-time law prof, has never published a piece of scholarly work and yet, he has found time to write two biographies about himself. His story is becoming more and more common.

Obama is from Hawaii, a product of private schooling. Where did he get his southern accent from? Chicago?

Obama has unleashed a team of lawyers to harass a journalist, Stanly Kurtz, who is investigating young Barry's relationship to Bill Ayers, the self-described anarchist terrorist. Obama's lawyers have successfully removed documents that may chronicle this relationship. What is Obama hiding? Is this how he will run the White House?

Who is this man? Who among you really know who he is?

John McCain: son of patriots, suffered as a patriot, leader of men, politician, erstwhile businessman?, statesman, foreign policy wonk, flawed, strong, courageous, battered, re-surgent.

Will you vote for the devil you know or the devil you don't know?

I am concerned with Obama's lack of experience as well. I am tired of the Democrats comparing McCain to Bush. McCain has voted against Republicans and with Democrats many times. If anything he is guilty of reaching across party lines and voting as an American.

I am also worried about taxes being raised to pay for some of the programs he is talking about. Wait, there are no programs he is talking about.

He has picked Joe Biden because of his strong Catholic roots. Are we bringing religion back into politics???

Patriotism isn't something you can expect, it is something you feel. Obviously Obama doesn't feel it. McCain can and does display patriotism. We all know his history with Vietnam so I won't go into that. But, I will say he has been through the fire and came out a better person and successful citizen. But, he doesn't know how many houses he owns. There is a threat to national security and his ability to lead.

ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN,MSNBC and Hollywierd can't get enough of Obamamania even more reason to not vote for him. When journalism is tilted one way then you never can get a real sense of equality in reporting. FOX news has taken hits as pro McCain, yet they talk about both candidates and yes, they are fair and balanced. And the other networks love to chide them for being neutral.

My vote will be cast for the candidate that I believe can best lead this country during these tough times. I am not voting because people are looking at a popularity contest.

Similarly, we need to look at our Senate and Congressional leadership. The President doesn't get what they want all the time. The Senate and Congress control what happens and what doesn't happen in this country. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon and blaming President Bush for everything, take a closer look and see who voted which way on all issues and a clearer vision on who is to blame becomes apparent. Where are the Senate and Congressional delegates right now? On vacation as energy prices are at their highest levels ever. Where is the legislation to reduce these costs? None of them even want to address it. Why? It is an election year and none of them want to chance making Americans mad by voting any type of legislation.

I am also sick and tired of hearing how President Clinton was one of the greatest President's ever. At the time prior and during his presidency, America experienced an unparalleld growth due to the electronic boom of the internet age and dot.com businesses. Britney Spears could have been the President and we would have had historic economic growth!!!!!

Do your homework. Stop trading insults and innuendos and vote for the best candidate. Just remember who is really controlling this country. Lastly, Vote. If you don't vote, then shut up and take your lumps as you are the cause of the problem not the solution.

OH, MY GOD! OBAMA DOESN'T ALWAYS WEAR A FLAG PIN!

I'll bet any of you $10 that the writer of this letter wasn't wearing a flag pin when he wrote it. Congratulations on hitting almost all of Rush's talking points, author. Honestly, you people are like parrots. "FLAG PIN, FLAG PIN, SQUAAAAK!"

It's just like with Clinton. You right wingers manage to get yourselves talked into going with the millionaire, trust fund Republican elitist who has NO CLUE what your life is like instead of the guy who grew up JUST LIKE YOU. Clinton and Obama are from broken homes, WORKED AND SAVED AND PUT THEMSELVES THROUGH SCHOOL ON THEIR BRAINS, and made their way through life like the rest of us, on their wits and skills, not their daddy's bank accounts and contacts. But you guys go with who you'd 'most like to have a beer with.' Neat...

Look at McCain. Yes, he was a POW and we thank him for his service. He also finished fifth from last in his class at the Naval College which he attended on his daddy's reputation and money, never held a private sector job (or created any jobs, another Rushbot talking point against Obama) and has sucked from the government teat his entire life. He also divorced his first wife after she was disfigured in a horrible car accident and has been a goldbricker ever since. Yeah, he's swell.

Please, people, try to remember that spouting talking points actually just makes YOU look stupid, shallow and uninformed.

"....sucked from the government teat his entire life." oh, please Oh Please. You consider a career military officer and Senator as sucking from the government teat? Would Joe Biden and Barack Obama also qualify by your metaphor? They each got their feet wet being lawyers for a couple of years before lining up on your "teats". BTW, John McCain was a POW for five and a half years in a hell-hole on the other side of the world. The only thing that kept him alive was the thought of returning to a loving and caring wife. When he returned, he found that she had "moved on" to other men while he was in captivity. She never knew if he would ever return to her. Neither is to blame for their shattered marriage/emotions. Thousands suffered the same fate. He acknowledged before the entire country that this is his greatest failure. I accept this as another casualty of that war. Why can't you? What does this have to do with you?

Obama has never been tested other than in a controlled environment (classroom). He's an intelligent, sometimes articulate man and I respect his aspirations. I think he's too green. I think that our adversaries would much prefer Obama sitting across the table than John McCain. Obama would be much easier to fool and manipulate.

The Constitution does not spell out qualifications or requirements for the Office of President, so that argument falls flat. Prospector,

I enjoy using hyperbole to prove points.

    Fallacy of popularity:

The Appeal to Popularity has the following form:

Most people approve of X (have favorable emotions towards X).
    Therefore X is true.

Do you have any arguments that don't rely on this?

So far your main reasoning that we should vote for McCain, essentially boils down to that he was a POW for five years. While certainly no one is diminishing that, I don't see the connection between that and why we shouldn't vote for Obama.

If anything with the way our foreign relations are, we don't need someone who knows how to bully, we need someone who knows how to talk, to use that lost art known as diplomacy.

Also I should point out that there's a lot more to your story about McCain's "greatest moral failure".

    A small snippet:

""McCain also wrote in his memoir that he had separated from Carol before he started dating Cindy. However, notes King, "his own divorce filing shows they dated for nine months while he was still living with Carol, and records show he applied for a marriage license in Arizona before his divorce was final.""

    * Obama will be a radical on the abortion issue as signaled by his blocking of emergency medical aid for babies who survive abortion;
    * Obama will attempt to ban the use of firearms for defense by law-abiding citizens;
    * Obama will raise tax rates up to 60 percent;
    * Obama will "transform the U.S. Treasury into the United Nations' ATM";
    * Obama will encourage high fuel prices and will remove more farmland from production;
    * Obama will raise the percentage of Americans who pay no taxes at all, from 30 percent to 40 percent – at the expense of those who do.
    * Obama will transfer child-rearing responsibility and authority from parents to the federal government with his "0 to 5" program.

Barack does believe strongly in his favorite Bible verse. He wants to take care of the least of them – but with your money, not his. The McCains voluntarily gave almost 24 percent of their income to charity over the last several years. The Obamas averaged a bit less than 5 percent. Obama's own half brother is living on less than $15 a year in a Kenyan shantytown. But Obama is not going to help him. He wants your tax dollars to do his "charity."

    http://www.suntimes.com/news/1119352,CST...

How will he do it? He wants to commit .7% of our GNP in the form of a tax, to the United Nations Millennium Development Goal project. As stated by the UN: "The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world's time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions-income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion-while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. They are also basic human rights-the rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security."

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?...
    http://mirror.undp.org/unmillenniumproje...

Folks, .7% of $14 trillion comes to around $98 billion dollars annually. That's twice what we spend in Iraq. This figure will grow as our economy grows. All this money would be given to the United Nations, one of the most incompetent and corrupt institutions on Earth. Our country's infrastructure is crumbling, we're facing problems with Social Security and Medicaid, and we have a military population to care for, not to mention $9 trillion or so of debt we've accrued. None of this is being discussed. We need to deal with these things.

Really? Name me another religion whose adherents have filmed their decapitation of a news reporter and shown it to the world. Name me another religion whose adherents stalked and planned for months and possibly years and carried out the destruction of American landmarks and over 3,000 of our people. Name me another religion whose adherents would tie a woman down and throw rocks at her until she dies, because she had the misfortune of being raped.

Islam is a religion of hate, intolerance for others, and violence. The sooner we rid the world of Islam the better off we'll all be. You appeasers will one day pay the price for your blindness.

That's the part that's spelled out in the constitution. I don't think anyone believed a person with less education and experience than it takes to run a business or a state would ever be considered for office by intelligent people. It's just one of those things. Technically, you're right, but that's the minimum, and people actually expect more than that. Barrack Obama hasn't used his training wheels. He wants to go straight to driving the car. The problem for many of us is, we're all stuck in the car. The rest of you are so high, you don't perceive the danger.

Well let's see what have Christians done?

In 1122 Christian crusaders swept over Jerusalem and slaughtered men, women and children, 'until their horses were knee deep in blood. We then went to the church to thank the Lord for his mercy.'

In 777 , Charlemagne, a devout Christian, after conquering the Saxon rebels, gave them a choice between baptism and execution. When they refused to convert, he had 4500 of them beheaded in one morning.

Queen Isabella, famous for sending Columbus to the New World in 1492, was well known also for her 'Spanish Inquisition', the gruesome torture and murder of tens of thousands of Spanish Jews, Muslims, homosexuals, people who read or wrote, uppity women, and anyone else not up to the Queen's strict standards. Isabella was a champion of the faith, piously congratulating herself as her victims writhed to their deaths in the flames and the many other ingenious methods of torture invented by her inquisitors.

Salem witch burnings, Chrisitian's conquering of the New World specifically in South America... yep Chrisians have never done anything wrong! Ever!

Also here's an article in reference to yours about George Obama:

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/22/b...

"But reports surfaced in the past few days, springing from an Italian Vanity Fair article saying George Obama is living in a shack and "earning less than a dollar a day."

    The reports left him angry.

"I was brought up well. I live well even now," he said. "The magazines, they have exaggerated everything. "

Dearest allhaileris, you are referring to Islamic extremists, not Muslims. Do some research, man..

Here, in the good ol' U.S. of A., we also have hate, intolerance of others and violence in the name of religion. Those people are called "Christian Extremists" (Army of God, Lambs of God, Aryan Nation, the KKK) and do things like drag people to death, bomb abortion clinics and appear regularly on the Jerry Springer Show.

Hitler Himself justified the extermination of the Jews citing the Bible and Jesus:

Hitler & Cardinal"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before in the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice.... And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people.... When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those (the Jews) by whom to-day this poor people is plundered and exploited. "

(Adolf Hitler, in his speech on 12 April 1922)

[Note, "brood of vipers" appears in Matt. 3:7 & 12:34. John 2:15 depicts Jesus driving out the money changers (adders) from the temple. The word "adders" also appears in Psalms 140:3]

allhaileris: The only thing keeping Christians under control these days are the secular constitutions that govern western nations. There's a reason for these: two thousand years of European history. And it continues to this day. In Bosnia it was Christian Serbs ethnically cleansing Bosnian Muslims, not the other way around. Any religion that considers itself the truth for all humanity is bound to get violent (this includes Marxism by the way; that was an absolutist religion too).

Please explain how the fact that it took place a long time ago at all makes it any less atrocious or relevant. But if you insist on more up to date examples:

"... The hatred and division between the Hutus and Tutsis was propagated by the missionaries as favorable for their objectives of conversion to Christianity.

One priest even burned down his own church to kill hundreds of Tutsis who had taken sanctuary there. Two priests were sentenced to death in 1998 for their roles in this genocide and two Benedictine nuns who supplied gasoline for the burning of Tutsi civilians sheltered in their church fled to Belgium where they were later convicted of complicity to murder.

“Sister Maria Kisito, who received 12 years, and her Mother Superior, Sister Gertrude, who received 15 years, were convicted of aiding in the slaughter of some 7,000 people who sought refuge at their convent in southern Rwanda. Prosecutors argued that they called in Hutu militiamen to drive people out of the convent knowing they would be killed, and later provided gasoline that militiamen used to set fire to a garage in which about 500 Tutsis had taken refuge.”" (Washington Post, June 9, 2001)[6]

But, I am retired military, and as I stated in my comment, military affiliated people seem to be the only ones who still show proper respect to the flag. I stand by what I wrote. Using the placement of the hand on the heart, or the wearing of a flag pin, is not a good test of someones patriotism. Most people simply haven't been taught how to respect the flag, or what it signifies. While it irritates the hell out of me, I would not be so preumptious to say that someone who fails to place their hand over their heart is unpatriotic.

Couples used to fornicate in caves right next to their children. people used to believe apollo drove the sun across the sky in his chariot. people used to believe the world was flat. people used to use homosexuals as kindling for burning witches. people used to believe and do many things that are no longer relevant in our world. I happen to be a nationalist. I love my country, right or wrong. I love Americans. I even love Barrack Obama. I place the security and prosperity of my country above all others. I expect that residents of other countries should feel the same way about their countries. If we come to an impasse, we fight it out. There are many ways to fight. You people relentlessly side against the family of your own country. You're mixed up. Thanks to the sacrifices of others you don't have to pay for your actions or beliefs. This gives you a false sense of righteousness. When one day your bill comes due, or it comes due for your children, you won't see the connection. This shows that liberalism is a mental disorder. You fight against your own self interest. The rest of us are equally to blame because we protect you from the consequences of your actions.

My whole point about the flag pin is that Obama was singled out for not wearing it, but if you look at video and pictures of the House and Senate, no one wears them. Everyone wore them for a little while, then the novelty wore off. People slowly stopped wearing them and when they saw Obama without one the Republican spin machine went on the attack.
