Public Safety Report — August 30

The Public Safety Report is compiled from criminal complaints filed in state and federal courts, as well as some police blotter information, trooper dispatches, fire department reports and interviews with public safety officials. Individuals named as arrested and/or charged with crimes in this report are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.
Assault
• Tianna Banks, 25, of Anchorage, was charged with assault or battery on a police officer after she allegedly threw a punch and attempted to kick a Fairbanks police officer early Friday morning. Police were responding to a report of 10 people fighting at the Trappers Shack Bar.
• Lyon Burke Edwin, 35, of Koyukuk, was charged with fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched his uncle in the head Thursday.
• Dayla Fulton-Leffel, 25, of North Pole, was charged with fourth-degree assault after she allegedly punched her husband Wednesday.
• Michael Wiehl, 31, of Tanana, was charged with fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched his wife and held a knife to her throat Saturday.
Burglary
An attempted break-in was reported Thursday in the 500 block of Trainor Gate. Nothing appeared to be taken, according to Fairbanks police records.
DUI
• Jessica Jean Carlton, 32, of Fairbanks, was charged with driving under the influence after Alaska State Troopers observed her fail to signal a turn early Sunday morning on Standard Avenue near Peger Road.
A chemical test found her breath-alcohol content to be 0.085.
• Boyd McKay Evark, 19, of Fairbanks, was charged with driving under the influence after Fairbanks police noticed him driving in the median of the Johansen Expressway near Danby Street early Sunday morning. Evark did not know where he was or how he got there, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
A drug recognition expert determined that Evark was under the influence of depressants, cannabis and methamphetamine and was unable to drive.
• Grant E. Giese, 22, of Delta Junction, was charged with driving under the influence after Fairbanks police witnessed him weaving late Wednesday night on Airport Way near Lathrop Street.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.102.
• Michael Jay Johnson, 46, of Anchorage, was charged with felony driving under the influence after Fairbanks police received a report of a possible intoxicated driver heading toward the city on the Richardson Highway Tuesday.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.210, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 to operate a motor vehicle.
Johnson was previously convicted of felony driving under the influence in March 2007 and driving under the influence in June 2004, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
He also was charged with driving with a revoked license.
• Steven George Jutila, 48, of North Pole, was charged with driving under the influence after Fairbanks police observed him illegally back out of the Kodiak Jacks parking lot late Wednesday night.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.142.
• Anthony James Mayner, 24, of Fort Wainwright, was charged with driving under the influence after North Pole police spotted him speeding early Friday morning on the Richardson Highway.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.182.
He also was charged with driving with a suspended license.
• Carlos Gabriel Martinez, 20, of Fairbanks, was charged with driving under the influence after Fairbanks police observed him racing another vehicle Sunday on Airport Way near Market Street.
Martinez was traveling at approximately 100 mph and did not stop for almost a mile after police activated their lights and sirens, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.088
He also was charged with failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer.
• Anna Marie Merchant, 22, of North Pole, was charged with driving under the influence after North Pole police came upon her vehicle stopped in the middle of Dyke Road Monday.
A chemical test found her breath-alcohol content to be 0.117.
• Kenneth L. Purcell Jr., 23, of Butte, Mont., was charged with driving under the influence after troopers received a report of a possible intoxicated driver Sunday afternoon at the Yukon River rest stop.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.109.
• Daniel Lee Wilson, 32, of North Pole, was charged with driving under the influence after North Pole police received a report of a possible intoxicated driver Saturday at Sourdough Fuel on Badger Road. Wilson admitted to taking Percocet but refused a drug recognition exam.
A urine test found he was under the influence of marijuana and methamphetamine.
Failure to register
Leonard J. Nickoli, 41, of Fairbanks, was charged with second-degree failure to register as a sex offender or child kidnapper after Fairbanks police were called Tuesday to disperse inebriates in front of Gottschalk’s and discovered Nickoli was out of compliance with the state’s registry.
Multiple charges
• A North Pole man is accused of entering a woman’s home early Sunday morning to offer her cocaine and use an Internet dating site.
Sidney R. Huntington, 25, of North Pole, has been charged with first-degree burglary, fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance, fourth-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
The woman called troopers to report the man entered her home and offered her cocaine but left when she asked him to. He returned a few minutes later to use her computer in the basement while she waited for troopers upstairs.
Troopers arrived to find Huntington sitting at the computer with a bag of cocaine on the desk and a credit card next to him with an online dating site on the screen along with Huntington’s e-mail, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
Huntington also apparently urinated on the floor, which the woman estimated would cost about $100 to have cleaned.
• Joseph M. Bason, 33, of North Pole, was charged with third-degree assault after he allegedly choked his wife and threatened to kill her with a knife Sunday. Troopers located Bason in Delta Junction, and he also was charged with driving under the influence.
• Thomas M. Byrd, 21, of Fairbanks, was charged with driving under the influence after North Pole police pulled him over Friday at the North Pole Pizza Hut.
A chemical test found his breath-alcohol content to be 0.218.
Byrd admitted the vehicle he was driving was stolen, and troopers confirmed the truck had been reported stolen. Byrd also was charged with first-degree vehicle theft and driving with a revoked license.
• A North Pole man is accused of stealing a truck and tools from a North Pole plumber
Bradley P. Crossland, 25, has been charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree theft.
He allegedly entered the home of his boss earlier this month took $50 from childrens’ piggy banks before taking the truck for several days without permission. Troopers investigating the case also discovered that Crossland had pawned at least one tool, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
• John M. Forton, 50, of Wasilla, was charged with driving under the influence and fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched a man who worked for him Thursday afternoon.
The men were in town on business, and Forton became angry with his employee about the route he was taking back to their hotel from the Showboat, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
Forton allegedly punched the man in the parking lot of Fred Meyer on Airport Way and told him to get out.
He also was charged with refusal to submit to a chemical test.
• Presley Lolnitz, 23, of Koyukuk, has been issued a summons to appear in Galena court on charges of driving under the influence and furnishing alcohol to a minor related to the July drowning death of David Dayton, 28, of Koyukuk.
Troopers in Galena were called for a search and rescue operation for Dayton on July 13 on the Koyukuk River.
Dayton was found dead about three miles up the river later that day. Troopers have previously said alcohol was a factor in the death.
A 19-year-old at the scene also has been issued to a summons to appear in court on a charge of minor consumption.
Theft
Samule M. Tutton, 25, of Fairbanks, was charged with second-degree theft after he allegedly tried to steal two bottles of vodka worth more than $80 from Fred Meyer Saturday.
Tutton has two previous theft convictions within the past five years, both of them in February, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
