Enjoy these last moments of winter because summer chores won't let you hibernate
Published Thursday, March 6, 2008
Is that spring I smell, or did someone just Febreeze the couch? This 40 degree weather in March has got me so confused. Heck, the other day I hung some laundry out and fired up the barbecue then went inside and stoked the fire.
All that daylight now, too — with a summery tint to it — makes me realize that if it’s not the end of winter right now, it will be soon.
Thank goodness. I was just starting to have some free time.
Maybe I’ll bundle up this week just for fun and pretend it’s really cold. I’ll stoke the fire and drink that last relaxing cup of coffee before the madness of spring chores really arrives. I’ll sleep a solid eight hours and not feel panicked when my eyes open to daylight. No, this week I’m going to bury my head in the sand and pretend I don’t have a house to build and a summer business to run and a garden to plant and fish to catch and berries to pick and, and ...
A hammock to hang up and look at.
Skate-a-thon
If the recent spaghetti feed fundraiser is any indication of the generosity of Delta Junction residents, who raised $14,787.64, Alexis Flynn will soon get her kidney transplant. The little girl will get a kidney from her father, Dave Flynn, when she is healthy enough to go through the life-saving surgery. Until then, the community is helping with fundraising efforts for the operation that will take place in Seattle and require a three-month stay for her and her family.
You can help out Saturday by attending the skate-a-thon fundraiser or by donating funds for the cause.
Pick up pledge sheets at City Hall, gather pledges and plan on coming out to skate for an hour on Saturday at the Liewer-Olmstead Ice Arena. Skate rentals are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you have your own, bring them. Pledge sheets and donations should be turned in on the day of the skate.

Pre-order bake sale
One look at this order form and you’ll gain 20 pounds. That’s because the baked goods offered by BPA’s pre-order Easter bake sale sound so good I could eat the paper. Here — see for yourself — this is what’s available to order: Easter cupcakes decorated to look like baskets, homemade creme pies (coconut, banana, chocolate, vanilla, lemon), raspberry ribbon pie with cream cheese and raspberry layers, cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, pastel-colored macaroons and hot cross buns.
Drooling?
Me too. Place your order by March 17 and then pick up your order at the high school gym on March 22. You can find an order form online on the Delta News Web at www.deltanewsweb.com (look in the archives). You can also e-mail your order to Anne Lindquist at alindquist@dgsd.k12.ak.us or call 895-5029 for more information.
I’ve got my order in. The next time you see me, I might be twice the woman I am now.
‘Radio Ga Ga’
Delta Junction residents might soon have more options on their radio dials. (Yippee!) TBC Radio, a secondary broadcasting company, will soon be transmitting a country music format and a popular music format on two different stations in the Delta Junction area. According to Walter Harper, the sales manager for the company, they are just waiting on final FCC approval to get the music on the airwaves. The transmitter and necessary equipment are already in place, and the company expects to start broadcasting this month. Because of a delay, it’s now looking more like April before we can dial it in. Harper said the formats will be family-friendly and also will broadcast the Rush Limbaugh show. Watch here for updates.
