Interior teams fall in consolation bracket contests

The Interior’s Class 1A and 2A basketball teams suffered through some tough times on the final day of their respective state tournaments at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Four teams were battling for fourth place in the three-day events and all four came up on the short end of the score.

In the Class 1A tournament, Fort Yukon dropped a hard-fought 57-55 overtime decision to Elim and the Huslia girls suffered a 56-34 loss to Alak of Kaktovic.

In Class 2A action, the Tri-Valley boys suffered a 77-46 setback at the hands of Noorvik and the Northway girls lost to Cook Inlet Academy, 55-35.

In the Class 1A championship games, the Buckland boys beat Kalskag, 70-63 and the Buckland girls knocked off Togiak, 60-50.

Fort Yukon

Elim outscored Fort Yukon 7-5 in overtime to win the battle of two teams who use the same nickname — Eagles.

It was a see-saw battle the entire game. Fort Yukon took the early lead, 15-7, but then fell behind 26-25 at halftme. Fort Yukon regained the lead at the end of the third quarter, 41-37, but Elim rallied again to tie the score at 50 at the end of regulation.

Shawn Peter had a spectacular game for Fort Yukon as he poured in 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a losing cause. Logan Fields added 13 points and registered three steals, while Zack Carroll had 10 points and seven rebounds. Wes James contributed nine points and garnered 10 rebounds.

Four Elim players finished in double figures. Donald Saccheus led the way with 17 points and three steals. Oscar Takak Jr. had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Takak registered 13 points, with Bart Jackson adding 12 points and four assists.

Fort Yukon finished the season with a 23-4 record.

Huslia

Alak’s hot shooting from the outside sank Huslia. Alak nailed six 3-pointers on its way to an 18-point win. Huslia made just one shot from beyond the arc.

Stephanie Aguvluk led Alak’s 3-point onslaught with four long-range bombs and a game-high 22 points. Nikki Mayer added 13 points, 13 rebounds and five steals. Alyssa Agnesagga chipped in 10 points and had five steals.

Alak raced out to a 30-12 lead at halftime and never looked back. The Huskies outscored the Huslers 15-6 in points off turnovers.

Serena Edwin knocked down 17 points for Huslia. Samantha Sam chipped in 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Tri-Valley

Defending champion Noorvik started fast and never looked back in racing past Tri-Valley. The Bears took a 14-3 lead in the first quarter and then broke the game wide open with a 28-16 run in the second quarter.

Ben Renshaw had a big game for Tri-Valley with 18 points, while Caleb Harris added nine, all on 3-pointers.

Willy Zibell had a monster performance for the Bears, pouring in 33 points, grabbing a game-high eight rebounds and dishing out three assists. Justin Williams registered 15 points and pulled down five rebounds. Tim Field had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the winners.

Northway

Cook Inlet outscored Northway in every quarter en route to a 20-point win in the 2A girls fourth-place game.

Kelsey Brush powered Cook Inlet with a 23-point, 14-rebound performance. She also had two assists and three steals. Annie Smithwick had nine points and three steals for the winners.

Katherine Albert registered 19 points for Northway, which was making its first state tournament appearance since 1985. Eva Thomas added 10 points for the Warriors.

    Great job Ft. Yukon, Huslia, and Northway it's a great achievement to make it to state. Hold you head up high!!!!
