ANCHORAGE -- The 2008 Mount McKinley climbing season is under way.

May 1 is the unofficial opening day for climbers taking on North America's highest peak.

Before the season ends in about two months, between 1,200 and 1,300 climbers are expected to try and scale the 20,320-foot mountain.

Park Service spokeswoman Maureen McLaughlin says Peter Hillary will be among them. He is the son of Mount Everest pioneer Sir Edmund Hillary. He will be on the mountain in June.

Walter Harper was the first climber to summit. He did it in 1913.

Since then, 16,769 climbers have enjoyed the view from the top.
