Cold weather stays late, but activities heat up in Delta Junction

Well, spring can’t decide if it wants to come or go. Monday brought at least 5 inches of wet snow to my neck of the woods, and boy, that was not how I was hoping to start the week. Tuesday brought an excavator to my house, and that sure improved my mood. The hole for my new house was dug and many, many stumps were pulled around the area. I’m still smiling about that. Our land has been a work in progress. I’ve been thinning it out ever since we bought it — keeping the large, good trees and getting rid of the intensely thick willows that choke everything. But that leaves stumps. Ugly, nasty stumps. Slowly, we’ve been pulling them out with the truck and a cable, leaving a nice forest floor that you can walk through. But to see that excavator come in and do in minutes what would take us all day — wow! I loved it! (Who knew dirt work could be so exciting?)

And they brought a septic tank. Yep. I’m getting indoor plumbing! Despite spring’s tardiness, I’m one happy camper. Bring on the dishwasher already!

Kindergarten preregistration begins

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 are invited to Delta Elementary School today to check out the school, the kindergarten teachers, and even ride the bus. This pre-registration for kindergarten is important in order for the school to plan on how many new students will be attending next fall. The event is scheduled today at 1:45 p.m. Call Delta Elementary with questions; 895-4696. I’ll be there enrolling my first child. I hope I don’t have to get any shots.

Little League registration begins Saturday

Time to sign up for Little League! Children ages 5-16 can sign up for T-ball, minor, major, or senior leagues on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the IGA or Granite View Sports. Fees range from $25 to $55 and financial assistance is available. This program attracts more than 120 kids a year and at least seven volunteers are still needed to assist. There will be a meeting for interested people on May 8 at 7 p.m. in the youth building at First Baptist Church. Call Dave Becker at 895-5210 for more information.

Delta Booster Club needs your help

The Delta Booster Club, a community organized group that supports extracurricular activities of the school, is organizing and is hoping Deltans will show up in force for their next meeting on May 6 at 7 p.m. at the Delta High School Library. Club officers will be elected, ideas to promote school spirit will be discussed, and activities will be chosen to support. Many people at various levels of commitment are needed, even if you can only offer help occasionally. This is a great way to bring our community together to support opportunities for extracurricular activities at the schools. For more information, contact Sharon Waldo at 895-4731, or Laurel Jackson at 895-1061.

Relay For Life seeking teams

The big weekend is fast arriving when thousands of dollars will be graciously raised and miles will be walked in support of cancer awareness and prevention. Join community members and teams on the track from May 9 at 6 p.m. through May 10 at 6 p.m. Pledges are gathered and the more miles you walk around the track at Delta High School, the more money is raised. If you haven’t signed up for a team, but would still like to participate, feel free to show up and join a team, or call event chair Sharon Waldo at 895-4731 to see how you can become involved or make a donation. This is a fun and worthwhile cause. Luminaries are lit around the track in memory of those who have lost lives to cancer- a somber reminder as you make your laps. There is entertainment and music is on all the time, and friends get a chance to talk for miles. (You can also bring your tent and camp out.) Don’t miss this great community event in support of cancer research and to celebrate cancer survivors. Your last chance to purchase a luminary in memory of a loved one is on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at the entrance of the IGA.

Richardson Highway Scenic Byway meeting

A Corridor Partnership Plan (CPP) for the communities along the Richardson Highway Scenic Byway is the subject of a meeting to take place on May 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Delta Junction Community Center. This plan will represent the vision for the communities along the corridor and tell their stories. The meeting will introduce the draft vision for the CPP and future goals. After the CPP has been completed, grant funding opportunities will become available for projects. The CPP is being developed between communities with the assistance of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The workshop will provide the opportunity for members of the community to become involved.

Do a little toe-tappin’

Unwind tonight by attending the Fort Greely Middle School spring concert at 6:30 p.m. at the school.
