ANCHORAGE -- A bald eagle known as One Wing, which survived the Exxon Valdez oil spill, has died.

One Wing lived at the Bird Treatment and Learning Center in Anchorage. A veterinarian who performed a necropsy says a tumor was found on One Wing's heart and he died quickly.

The bird was called One Wing because when he was poisoned by crude oil in the 1989 spill in Prince William Sound, he fought rescuers so hard he tore up his wing beating it against the ground. The wing had to be amputated and the bird was not expected to survive.

But he did. One Wing lived at the center for nearly 20 years.

America's symbol of the largest oil spill in this Nation's history has died. A broken wing, broken lives and broken dreams for almost twenty years of denial and protracted litigation by EXXON for their negligence and failure to compensation the many, many victims. We shall not forget.

I'm sorry to hear this. As the night time voice of Norcon during the Oil spill I was appalled by the mess that man had created in the sound. This organization is such a blessing for us here in the interior and the Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow. They have blessed us with several eagles to release. And just this week I saw two eagles in the sky above my home. These very eagles may just have been some of the ones they brought for us to release. It's very special to all Native Americans. Thank you oh so much and I'll say a prayer for this organization and the birds they rehab. Without them we would lose so much. Mvto in my Muscogee Creek Language means Thanks.

Looks like some of us aren't nature lovers.
One Wing survived so far beyond what anyone had dared to imagine.
Snarky comments do not diminish what this eagle meant to many people. It just makes the commenter look pitiful.

Bird TLC does amazing things, every day.
