Women’s hoops search will take some time

While the hockey coaching search is in its final stage, the waiting continues on the women’s basketball front.
Until May 23, anyway.
That’s when the first review of resumes will begin for the spot vacated when head coach Lynne Andrew resigned in early April.
“We’re looking to get this going,” said Pamm Hubbard, the university’s compliance coordinator who also oversees the women’s basketball program. “Honestly, (the players are) champing at the bit to get this going too.”
All official applications for the position have to go through the university’s human resources department, and Hubbard said they can’t release the resumes to her until the 23rd.
But she knows that interest is out there, as roughly 15 hopeful applicants have contacted her already.
“There’s a lot of interest in it, which is nice,” Hubbard said. “We should have a great pool of people to look at their resumes.”
Hubbard also said that she finalized a search committee, though she added that she didn’t have permission yet to release their names. Hubbard would say that the committee is comprised of six people: a current player, an alumni of the program, a member of the community who’s a big supporter of the women’s program, a current Nanooks coach, a member of the booster club and a UAF faculty member.
“I try to get some people who are both on campus, off campus and the other side of the campus too,” Hubbard said. “I think we on this side of the campus get caught up on how we want things and then we step back and realize this person will have to (work with) the other side of campus too.”
After reviewing the resumes, Hubbard will set up the first round of phone interviews, which she hopes to have finished by mid June.

May 23rd? This is the problem with human resources at UAF. Get applications in and start going through the preliminary stages of qualifications now. The less qualified ones will still be there regardless of how long you wait, so why not get them out of the way when they come in? It's important to hire the right person, but it's also important to get it done in a timely manner. It's amazing that the hockey search is almost over, yet the women's basketball search won't even really begin until May 23rd. Maybe the new chancellor can look into why this takes so long. It has always boggled my mind.
Maybe he can look into why they let the Coach that turned men’s program around go. Then let his successor go. Now has a coach that doesn't know the best record in the BB program history was done with kids from Alaska. Maybe the athletic director doesn't know they have other sports than hockey on the hill?
