Fairbanks resident Joe Paskvan announced Wednesday he is running for the Alaska State Senate.

“I believe Fairbanks can be the economic hub of Alaska provided we build the right infrastructure today,” Paskvan said.

Energy, economy and education are just some of the challenges facing the state Paskvan said.

One of his highest priorities is working to raise Fairbanks’ low graduation rates.

“A state that values education is the way to the future,” he said.

Paskvan’s wife, Barbara, and two of his four children, Tommy and Ryan, stood beside him underneath the first family statue in Golden Heart Plaza downtown as he addressed some of his biggest concerns for his beloved state.

Paskvan, a Democrat, is vying for the seat currently held by Republican Sen. Gary Wilken, who is not running for re-election.

“I’m going to run an honest, clean and open campaign,” he said.

Paskvan joins Republican candidate Cynthia Henry of Fairbanks in the campaign for Seat E.

Both candidates are running unopposed so far.

June 2 is the final day to register as a candidate.

The primary election takes place Aug. 26.

Nice to be able to vote for someone other than the same old crew of the same crusty republicans who keep giving Fairbanks a bad name in Juneau.
