Public Safety Report — May 15

The Public Safety Report is compiled from criminal complaints filed in state and federal courts, as well as some police blotter information, trooper dispatches, fire department reports and interviews with public safety officials. Individuals named as arrested and/or charged with crimes in this report are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.
Assault
• An Allakaket man was charged with two counts of assault and weapons misconduct after allegedly beating up his wife on Thursday.
Gilbert Vent, 52, was arrested after troopers traveled to the remote village north of Fairbanks to investigate a reported assault. According to a criminal complaint, troopers arrived to find the victim with both eyes nearly swollen shut and a badly bruised face.
The woman told troopers that Vent beat her after getting off the phone with a friend at 2:30 a.m. He allegedly hit her in the face, head, arms and body. She said he continued the beating after knocking her to the floor. At one point, the woman’s 10-year-old son jumped on Vent’s back in an attempt to stop the attack.
The woman and boy fled the house when Vent got a gun from the back room and went to a neighbor’s house. After they left, they and other residents in the area heard several gunshots coming from the direction of the house.
• Daryl Honea, 39, of Fairbanks was charged with domestic assault Saturday for allegedly backhanding his girlfriend during an argument as they drove down University Avenue. The woman called police at 9:30 p.m. after fleeing the vehicle.
According to a criminal complaint, Honea refused to let her out of the car when she originally tried to flee but then relented and left the scene. Police tracked Honea down at his home on Mack Boulevard and placed him under arrest.
• Luke Wynn Heagy, 44, of Fairbanks was charged with fourth-degree domestic assault for allegedly striking his girlfriend in the face and shoulder, as well as kicking her in the back, during an argument Saturday.
According to a criminal complaint, Heagy was upset at the woman because he gave her money to buy alcohol and she used it to eat instead. He is accused of grabbing her by the neck, forcing her to the ground and ripping her sweatshirt. The woman suffered a swollen eye and scraped shoulder.
• John Bruce Ruben Tegoseak Jr., 24, of Fairbanks and Vera Ellen Jones, 46, of North Pole were charged with fourth-degree assault Sunday in downtown Fairbanks.
According to a criminal complaint, Tegoseak is accused of punching his girlfriend and pushing her down, causing her to scrape her elbow. Jones, who is Tegoseak’s aunt, allegedly pulled the woman’s hair during the attack.
• A Fairbanks woman who allegedly burned her boyfriend’s pajamas during an argument was arrested on assault charges.
Billie M. Largen, 22, was charged with fourth-degree assault. In addition to burning his pajamas, she allegedly pushed the man down the entrance steps to the home and hit him in the face with a child’s toy, cutting his eye.
• Mitchell Duyck, 51, of Nenana was charged with fourth-degree assault for allegedly beating up his 64-year-old roommate.
The victim told troopers Duyck slammed him to the ground inside the home they shared and hit him in the back, according to a criminal complaint.
Burglary
Breanna Camille Dodge, 30, of Fairbanks faces charges of first-degree burglary and second-degree robbery for her involvement in a break-in at an Adams Drive apartment Saturday.
According to a criminal complaint filed in court, Dodge was one of two women who allegedly forced their way into an elderly woman’s apartment and stole a cell phone and jewelry boxes. The women were looking for a set of keys belonging to another man and evidently mistook the elderly woman for somebody else’s grandmother.
After the two women left with the cell phone and jewelry boxes, the victim called her cell phone and a woman answered. The victim offered the woman $50 to return the cell phone.
Later that evening, Dodge brought the woman’s phone to an apartment at Fairview Manor where the victim was visiting a friend. The victim called police, who responded and apprehended Dodge. The woman identified Dodge as one of the two women who forced their way into her apartment earlier that day. Dodge had the woman’s cell phone at the time of her arrest.
DUI
• Lawrence A. Derendoff, 34, of Fairbanks was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, refusal to submit to a chemical breath test and driving with a suspended license Monday.
Derendoff was stopped for failing to wear a seat belt. Authorities say he had an opened bottle of vodka in his vehicle, court records stated. Derendoff admitted he was too drunk to drive, records stated.
• Ryan William Patterson, 29, of North Pole was charged with drunken driving and two counts of weapons misconduct following a traffic stop Friday by Fairbanks police. According to a criminal complaint, Patterson was driving a 2007 Victory motorcycle on Noble Street when an officer observed him speed up to 45-50 mph in a 25 mph zone and pass a vehicle. The officer also noticed Patterson’s rear license plate was not displayed properly.
Upon contact, Patterson displayed signs of being intoxicated. He admitted to drinking one beer at the Midnite Mine just minutes earlier.
Though Patterson made no mention of having weapons, the officer noticed a collapsible baton and knife in Patterson’s jacket pocket while conducting field sobriety tests. Patterson also admitted to having a handgun on his person. Patterson was charged with fourth- and fifth-degree misconduct involving weapons.
His breath-alcohol content was measured at 0.124 percent by a chemical test.
• Matthew Dobbs, 30, of Anchorage was charged with drunken driving after being pulled over for having an inoperable rear license plate light Saturday. A trooper stopped Dobbs at 3:59 a.m. on Davis Road.
Dobbs, who appeared intoxicated, told the trooper he had consumed six or seven beers in the previous five or six hours. He failed field sobriety tests and registered a breath-alcohol content of 0.175 percent on a chemical test, according to a criminal complaint.
• Brandon Antonio Brown, 21, of Eielson Air Force Base was charged with driving under the influence Saturday as a result of a traffic stop.
North Pole police stopped Brown on the Old Richardson Highway for following a vehicle too closely and driving without his headlights on. The officer also observed Brown fishtailing around a turn going onto the Old Richardson, according to a criminal complaint. Brown, who appeared intoxicated, told the officer he hadn’t had enough alcohol to be over the legal limit but he failed field sobriety tests and registered a breath-alcohol content of 0.163 percent on a chemical test.
• Maryland A. Wells, 19, of Fort Wainwright was charged with drunken driving after a North Pole police officer pulled her over Saturday night for speeding and driving without her headlights on. Wells was going 55 mph in a 40 mph zone.
According to a criminal complaint, Wells displayed signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests but her breath-alcohol content was measured at 0.064 percent by a chemical test, which is below the legal limit.
• James S. McCollam, 56, of North Pole was charged with drunken driving after being stopped by North Pole police Friday.Acting on a tip, police stopped McCollam at Eighth Avenue and Ouida Way in North Pole. He appeared intoxicated and admitted to drinking three alcoholic beverages in the previous two hours. A chemical test measured his breath-alcohol content at 0.107 percent, according to a criminal complaint.
Eluding
• Oliver Moss III, 25, was charged with first-degree failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer based on an allegation he led Fairbanks police on a high-speed chase through a school zone Tuesday.
Moss’ speeds were estimated at as fast as 50 mph as he reportedly eluded a Fairbanks police officer in the Hamilton Acres subdivision, according to a police statement.
The officer discontinued the chase for safety reasons, and later the vehicle was located on Dunbar Avenue. The homeowner denied that Moss was there, and refused to let officers inside the home to search.
Officers surrounded the house and shortly before they obtained a search warrant, Moss turned himself in, the police statement said. Homeowner Glenn Small, 66, was charged with first-degree hindering prosecution.
• Marquez L. Pennington, 28, of Fairbanks was charged with felony eluding and driving with a revoked license after a Fairbanks police officer who knew Pennington’s license was revoked saw him driving on Airport Way on Friday afternoon.
When the officer attempted to pull him over, Pennington drove through the parking lot of Mighty Dollar on Cushman Street at 40 mph and cut two vehicles off as he turned onto Stacia Street. Pennington then sped up to 40-50 mph on Stacia Street, running a stop sign in the process. He was taken into custody after stopping in a parking lot off Stacia Street.
Pennington was also charged with violating conditions of his release.
• A Fairbanks man wanted on a warrant for eluding was charged with the same felony offense Friday after leading Fairbanks police on a high speed chase across the city.
Trevor P. Edstrom, 39, was charged with felony eluding after a Fairbanks police officer observed him leaving a known drug house. The officer ran the vehicle plate and it came back to Edstrom, who was wanted on a $3,500 warrant for eluding and failing to report to jail. His license was also canceled.
According to a criminal complaint, Edstrom refused to stop when the officer activated his emergency lights and siren, accelerating up to 100 mph on Peger and Van Horn roads while failing to stop at a stop sign at Peger and Van Horn. Edstrom continued down Van Horn at about 100 mph and led police to the end of South Cushman Street, where he turned onto the Dyke Road for 3.5 miles.
Edstrom fled from his vehicle into the woods near the small arms range on Fort Wainwright. He came out of the woods about 15 minutes later after the officer warned him over his PA that a canine was on the way to track him.
Harassment
Richard D. Broussard, 47, of Fairbanks was charged with first-degree harassment Tuesday based on an allegation he spit on a Fairbanks police officer. Police were called to Adams Drive on a report of a man, Broussard, who was drunk in some bushes, according to court records. Authorities say the spitting happened as Broussard was being frisked.
Theft
A Carr Avenue resident reported Tuesday that gasoline was stolen from their gas cans, according to Fairbanks police.
Vehicle crashes
• A 20-year-old North Pole man dropped a lit cigarette on the floor of his vehicle and drove off the Richardson Highway trying to retrieve it early Tuesday.
The man hit a mile post sign and a fence, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Damage to Corey Rains’ 2004 Toyota Corolla was estimated at $2,500, while damage to the sign and fence were estimated at $500, a trooper report said.
• A 38-year-old Fairbanks woman suffered minor injuries when she swerved to miss a dog and hit a speed limit sign on McGrath Road on Tuesday.
