Lathrop senior Reese Hanneman is getting great times on the trail and great scores on his tests.

His Advanced Placement calculus teacher, Dan Hackett, said Hannemen scored an 800 on the math portion of the SAT exam.

“Reese is an excellent student who is not only good at the material but is truly interested in the mathematics and how it relates to real-world applications,” Hackett said.

Hanneman is in Advanced Placement Calculus BC, the top math class in high school, equivalent to second semester calculus in college. He said he likes the subject because there are definite answers and it can be build on itself.

“I see math as being very useful in many fields of work, and so I study and work at it so that I will fully understand it,” Hanneman said.

Hanneman said he is excited about studying engineering and architecture, two fields that depend on math. He also plans on pursuing cross-country skiing during his college education.

Hanneman is a top junior skier in the nation and recently competed in the Junior Olympics. He dreams of representing the U.S. in the World Cup and Olympics before settling down as a architect or engineer.

His hero is cross-country skier Kikkan Randall because she has shown that hard work pays off.

Aside from skiing, Hanneman enjoys road cycling, triathlon and running.
