Photo by University of Alaska Fairbanks archives

Definitely a booming town at the time of this photograph, the boats are the Delta, Rock Island and Tanana, all steamboats that served passengers and freight in Fairbanks and up and down the Yukon River. Many of the miners from Nome and Dawson took transport on these boats with the discovery of gold in the Tanana Valley to find their fortune in Fairbanks. These boats are tied up at the N.C. Co. Dock and the Pioneer Dock, which were downtown near today's KeyBank building and parking lot. — Candy Waugaman
