Palin says she would seek high office again

Published Tuesday, November 11, 2008

WASILLA, Alaska -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she wouldn't hesitate to run for the presidency in four years if it's God's will, even though she never thought Campaign 2008 would be "as brutal a ride as it turned out to be."

In a series of interviews in the wake of last Tuesday's elections, Palin said she had no problem with Republican presidential nominee John McCain, but that she resents rumors she said were spread about her and her family by the Arizona Republican's aides. She emphatically denied that she was a drag on the GOP ticket.

"I think the economic collapse had a heckuva lot more to do with the campaign's collapse than me personally," the governor said in an interview broadcast Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show.

Palin also said "There were a lot of times I wanted to shout out, 'Hey, wait a minute, it's not true.' It's pretty brutal."

Nevertheless, the relatively obscure governor of Alaska, whose selection for the ticket by McCain last August brought excitement - and controversy - to the 2008 campaign, said she would be eager to do it all again under the right circumstances.

"I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door," Palin said in an interview with Fox News on Monday. "And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."

In the wide-ranging interview, Palin said she neither wanted nor asked for the $150,000-plus wardrobe the Republican Party bankrolled, and thought the issue was an odd one at the end of the campaign, considering "what is going on in the world today."

"I did not order the clothes. Did not ask for the clothes," Palin said. "I would have been happy to have worn my own clothes from Day One. But that is kind of an odd issue, an odd campaign issue as things were wrapping up there as to who ordered what and who demanded what."

"It's amazing that we did as well as we did," the governor said of the election in a separate interview with the Anchorage Daily News.

"I think the Republican ticket represented too much of the status quo, too much of what had gone on in these last eight years, that Americans were kind of shaking their heads like going, wait a minute, how did we run up a $10 trillion debt in a Republican administration? How have there been blunders with war strategy under a Republican administration? If we're talking change, we want to get far away from what it was that the present administration represented and that is to a great degree what the Republican Party at the time had been representing," Palin said in a story published Sunday.

Palin has scheduled a series of national interviews this week with Fox, NBC's "Today" show and CNN. She also plans to attend the Republican Governors Association conference in Florida this week.

Palin has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012. She also could seek re-election in 2010 or challenge Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Still uncertain is the fate of Sen. Ted Stevens, who is leading in his bid for another term but could be ousted by the Senate for his conviction on seven felony counts of failing to report more than $250,000 in gifts, mostly renovations on his home. If Stevens loses his seat, Palin could run for it in a special election.

Palin and McCain's campaign faced a storm of criticism over the tens of thousands of dollars spent at such high-end stores as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to dress the nominee. Republican National Committee lawyers are still trying to determine exactly what clothing was bought for Palin, what was returned and what has become of the rest.

I would be thrilled to see some new blood in the Republican Party in 2012 and beyond. But after these last couple of months, I think you have to remember, Governor, that what plays up there won't necessary work well on the national stage. I hope over the next few years you get a better handle on who we are out here. We're not a bad bunch, but no, we aren't going to vote for you if you aren't going to better understand us.

So let's start with this: G od doesn't care who runs for President of the U.S. He (she?) is a little busy now with other things. So it's your decision, Governor. And again, please do consider running. But it's your decision, not the Supreme Being's.

If she runs for higher office than she has to run as who she is and stating what she believes. Otherwise we end up with a canidate who panders to whomever they think will vote for them and will say anything to get elected. Sound familiar? Sarah, be yourself and let the chips fall where they may.

oh marlomille and amgray19, why don't you two just relax and let it go already. You bash any and every article on the govenor without really saying anything that really matters. "can't take criticism" she bit her tongue and kept on campaining without missing a beat, so that really does'nt make sense. "blaming everyone else but god" she stated many times the American people have spoken and they picked the other ticket. Folks, ya just sound silly with that stuff, let your anger go, you won this round, enjoy it, it never lasts long.

I'm sure it was an exiting ride these last months for Sarah, and she'd like to do it again. The crowd's adulation and worship must have been fantastic for Sarah to experience.

But let's be real. She often sounds like a high school kid, and her knowledge on issues is not there. World leaders should be brilliant and lead in the right direction, not just good looking and irreverent.

Sounds like Palin hasn't come off of cloud nine yet, and she's still too big for her britches. As the State earns less than $60 a barrel for its oil, and production declines, the real world challenges of our State will require more than Palin has shown she has.

    It will be interesting!

Saw Gov Palin making hot dogs last night for Greta Van and mixing up some lunch for the Toady show this morning. In both interviews she wore the same fancy looking dress suit. Give the poor woman an apron! So she doesn't, like, ruin that Armani... She has a future filling in for Martha Stewart but, please God, don't open any more doors for her in government.

marlomille, "Didn't God speak last Tue.?"

No, he gave us the freedom of choice. He gave us free will to decide. He gave us the power to take the Bible out of public schools, he gave us the power to be greedy, corrupt and immoral if we decide to do so. We have done so and we are now beginning to reap the consequences which started many years ago. It's going to get much worse before it gets better.

Palin is more than welcome to run in 4 years, but she won't have the free ride she enjoyed this last time. She'll need to spend a year raising money and then will have to fight it out with a dozen republicans in all the debates and primaries. If she thinks this is going to be friendly and congenial she is sadly mistaken. Huckabee is apparently already criss crossing Iowa and his base is almost identical to Palin's so she'd better get started.

I'm just wondering, what with the two plus months she spent on the campaign trail, the time spent on multiple interviews and preparing meals for everyone this week, and then next week's trip to the Republican Governor's Conference in Florida... when will the Governor be available to tend to the business at hand here in the state of Alaska? Will she soon be able to look into issue of gasoline prices? Just wondering....

I swear, there is no winning with some of you critics.

She's not giving interviews, there must be something wrong. She's giving too many interviews, what the hell is her problem?

She spends too much time with her family. If only she'd spend more time with her family.

She dresses too nice on the campaign trail. She dresses like a hillbilly.

She has no confidence. She's too damn cocky.

Make gasoline cheap. Dont try to buy me with a $1200 windfall check.

It's interesting to watch people get so worked up about Palin's chances in 2012. I think President of the United States of America is way out of Sarah's league. I don't think she's a bad person, but I think if she were a bit more politically savvy she would have bowed out this time around. It's plainly obvious that she has little understanding of important national and international issues. I also think picking her was a desperate move by the McCain campaign. A lot can happen in politics in 4 years.... for all we know, Obama may turn out to be a pretty good President. I'll start worrying about who's running for President in 2012 in a couple more years after the dust settles a bit. I think Sarah has A LOT of work to do if she wants to be a legitimate contender for President in 2012. Just my opinion.

Using the term "former community organizer" was perceived as a racial insult. Talking about his Chicago colleagues was perceived as an insult. "The Press seeks weakness in it's prey?" It does unless the prey happens to be a liberal democrate and then it not only does not seek weaknesses but makes darn sure that any weakness is covered up, not investigated and any weakness totally ignored. The liberal media goes after anyone that is not liberal and if they can find no weaknesses they don't mind a bit making up a bunch of fabricated stories, twisting the truth, and generally making a silk purse out of a sow's ear - to use the old expression. As I have said a dozen times and will continue to do so. We know more about Sarah's clothes than we know about the man we elected President.

The only thing close to whining that I heard from Palin was when people were taking shots at her family. Likewise, I heard Obama rightfully take exception to attacks on Mrs Obama. Otherwise, Palin took the hateful bombs thrown her way with style and grace.

I watched the interview last night. I didn't hear Palin whining. She seemed pretty upbeat to me. She was honest in rebutting anonymous slurs. That's not whining. Did you watch it, or are you relying on the AP interpretation?

You are correct that it was more Obama backers than Obama himself doing the complaining about perceived insults, but Obama did some of his own whining during the campaign, I recall BO talking about how (I'm paraphrasing) "They're going to try to scare you. That my name is a little different. That I don't look like the other guys on the dollar bill. They're calling me socialistic. I've been criticized, so it must be the silly season".

Maybe it's all in the perspective. What you call whining, I call explaining. And vice versa for the opposite candidate in question.

As for shutting up the critical press. The only way that could happen is if Palin were a Democratic candidate. Even the Washington Post admitted that their coverage was biased. The NYT, the tv networks, and the AP all gave one sided coverage. Besides history being made by Obama being elected, history was also made by the blatant disregard for honest reporting by the national press. It wasn't a shocker, but it was real. Look at the way that the press kept a lid on Obama's record and associates. After the vote, Tom Brokow said (again paraphrasing) "We really don't know who Obama is, do we?" Duh.

Glacier, here is an example of a Palin whine.

"Regarding information regarding my record that is now out there, much of it that was based on misinformation was a very very frustrating thing to have to go through when the record was never corrected. We would try to correct the record and too many in the media chose not to make those corrections or clarifications, and then I felt too often we were a bit defenseless in so many things that were reported wrongly that could have so easily been corrected just based on facts and…"

Life is not always fair Sarah..

That is my definition of whining about the press. You can think this is left wing press picking on her, but if it is all some liberal conspiracy then why did they not attack J McCain? There was lots of dirt on him, so why didn't it effect him. Why no post election interviews with him? Because he is a hell of a lot tougher then Palin is. The right wing press attacked Kerry in 04 with arguably more fervor then what you call the mainstream press did to Sarah Palin. The only reason the right wing (Murdock's empire and Rush) didn't attack Obama harder was that they didn't like McCain because he wasn't to the right far enough.

I can see why politicians don't pay attention to blogs!! This is unbelievable!
Palin is dammed if she does, and dammed if she doesn't.
Obama won, so why keep running Palin down, you who supported him?? Just take satisfaction that his policies will prove you made the right choice, as he starts his term!! Are you thinking you will push her so far down that she will never get up???(think again)...lol, if Obamas policies are as great as you think they are, he will not have a problem in 2012???

The main reason I supported Palin, is that she is just what she is!! Not an insider. So many times, all you see from any politician when being interviewed, is well thought out answers, that usually avoid the subject, or are spoken for "sound bites". You end up hearing nothing! With Sarah, I feel you get HER answer, like it or lump it. If she plans to run again, I hope she remains "an outsider"!
She brought life to McCains otherwise kinda dull campaign. People sat up and took notice...
Again, as I have mentioned before, take notice of why you are hearing so much negativity from the Republicans, staffers especially. THEY are planning for 2012 for "their" Republican choice, other than Palin. I can understand, but not agree with, this. The Obama supporters just MUST have doubts about him, if they are so anxious to put Palin down this early in the game???
I am glad she is doing interviews, and I perceive no "whine" what-so-ever!! Just telling it like it is. Imagine any other public figure speaking in her place? You STILL wouldn't know where they stood, or how THEY feel..
Again, we here on these blogs are never going to save or change the world, so blog on!! My short little stint on a blog page is not very fulfilling.... Showing ones self imagined writing or debating skills ain't my bag. I suck at both, but so be it. What ya see is what ya get!!!..lol

Well said glacierlies. I agree that Palin stood up to the criticism and took it with grace and style. I don't think that Biden took well to any criticism (the very little he received). They even banned using a TV station in FL due to questions he got a bit "uppidity" about. So Amgray 19's statement "She can't handle criticism that most major candidates endure, yet she wants to do it again? Well, then she better toughen up!" What criticism did the rest endure - none like she took on attacking her children, etc. None other's were called such names as Caribou Barbi and worse. If anyone had called Biden or Obama or family members any of these names etc. I don't think they would have taken it anywhere as calmly and graciously as she did!" I think she is already tough and I think these attacks and exposure to what the national media can dish out will better prepare her in the future.

That's it. That's the whining that is driving the liberals crazy! Good grief. Because Palin didn't say "Thank you very much for the lies told by the press in this campaign, and the personal slanders rendered. Please, may I have another?" If that's what's bothering you, you definitely need to get on with your life. This is nothing. Nada. Zero. Compare it to the everlasting real whining by Gore, Kerry and Edwards over 2000 and 2004, and that should give it some perspective.

McCain will give an interview. Give it time.

Fox, Rush, the Wall St. Journal (sometimes), and the Tulsa Daily as opposed to the NYT, The Wash Post, the AP, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, CNN, and the George Soros empire. Oh yea, I can see how you would think that the right wing controls the media.

Murdock owns over 175 newspapers himself, and Fox news as well as many many local news outlets around the nation and world. That is no insignificant thing. They all have one thing in common, they set the gold standard for far right wing media. I believe Fox News is now Number 1. But that is not half the story. A lot of the attacks on the Dem's came from CNN and the others in the past. Just the gravity of Fox pulled most of the news outlets far to the right years ago. Could it be that the republicans are in such a disarray that Fox and the others are going down with them?

Why do you think that Fox News is number one? Is it because the actual reporters aren't opining. People crave that. Opinion shows are fun to watch, but they mean nothing without truthful news reporting.

I'm not whining about the Republicans losing. I'm old enough to know that the pendulum is always swinging, back and forth.

Now, the people still griping about 2000 and 2004 are the ultimate in whiners. That is, until now. Now, it's the Palin bashers, who should be celebrating, but instead are still angry about an election that they won, who are the ultimate whiners.

Oh well, the American electorate has the shortest memories anywhere.
