Skipper from fishing show 'Deadliest Catch' sued

Published Saturday, November 15, 2008

SEATTLE — A man has sued the captain of the fishing crew that stars in the Discovery Channel’s popular program “Deadliest Catch” after suffering injuries on the skipper’s boat during a Seattle summertime festival.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Jon Moreno, the man suing skipper Sig Hansen, was like many thousands of others, partying during Seattle’s Seafair festival — an annual summertime celebration of the city’s ties to the sea.

According to the lawsuit, Moreno boarded Hansen’s boat with other partygoers. There, he and a friend were hoisted above the water by a crane on the crabbing boat and dropped into the water — an activity other people were doing.

Moreno says he was hurt in the fall, breaking his pelvis and other injuries, according to the lawsuit filed late last month in King County Superior Court.

The lawsuit seeks an undisclosed amount of money to cover medical and legal expenses and loss of work. Hansen and his company, Hansen Enterprises Inc., are named in the lawsuit.

    WAAAAAAAH! boy, what a loser!

Why o Why is nobody else suing them? Sounds like the boy had no business being on that boat in the first place if he's gonna whine about it.

Just because he doesn't have medical insurance doesn't mean Sig Hansen should have to pay for it, he boarded the vessel using his own free will and allowed himself to be rigged up in the crane knowing full-well what what was about to happen to him.

Maybe if he was mentally challenged or something he might have a case, otherwise he's just trying to make a buck by taking advantage of our legal system and the Hansen's, they should have had people sign waivers before they even set foot on their boat, next time.

absolutely agree with you, lost. he had to know about the show, knew there were big players involved... also knew what he was getting himself into before he allowed himself to be hoisted. have to wonder if he 2 sheets to the wind when he boarded, or when he filed the suit...

I doubt there will be a next time. Whatever happened to taking responsibility for your own actions? Did anyone force Jon Moreno to join in the fun? What a loser!

Such a shame one person has to ruin it for everybody else. Doesn't surprise me though.

    What a gutless cry baby!

Jon Moreno pretends to have "gonads" and takes the crane ride and now he wants money cause he "Hurt hisself.... WHAAAAAAAA!"

That attitude of REFUSING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ONE'S OWN ACTION is what has fouled up America lately.... DISGUSTING WHINER!!!!

i hope he wins as well; however i have family in the lower 48 who tell me that their state law has just been re-vised. up until now, if a person injured his/her self while attempting to break into YOUR house or while on YOUR property they could sue you for it... Is that not unbelievable? Now, it says if some one comes into your house or onto your land, you have the right to use deadly force if necessary to protect yourself, family, property, or livestock. not sure about washington's take on that matter...

Man, that is cr@p. Guess he's looking to make a buck off a famous guy who has money. Good luck trying to convince a jury that he deserves a dime for that. Goldstream, we can only hope they cracked before he managed to mess up the gene pool.

What garbage. It's stuff like this that makes me almost want tort reform. What happened to adults taking responsibility for choosing to engage in risky activities? He should have known that it wasn't a safe thing to go out and do, and own up to the risk he took.

I hope the judge throws this one out.

If that moron was 2 sheets, he probably wouldn’t have got hurt. Everyone knows it’s never the drunken guy that gets hurt. He knew the risk when he got on the crane.

He broke his hip, no small feat guys, his medical expenses should be covered at least. But I can see the otherside too. Mom always asked " Oh, so if your freinds jumped off a cliff, you would follow them?" This guy must have said yes.

Right, liberals look to a lawyer to lead them and then make fun of this guy. He, like you, wants what someone else has and is enlisting the help of a lawyer to get it. Lawyers have all but ruined this county and this guy has a very good chance of winning. Who pays? We do, through higher insurance rates which drives up the costs of goods and services and puts people out of work. Look for a lot more of this in the future.

If you really want to know what has driven up insurance rates you can look to the same Phil Gramm-pushed law that has led to our current economic crisis.

It also got rid of regulations that prohibited the insurance companies from gambling their assets in the stock market. Well, roadtrip, they did just that and lost their shorts with the rest of us a few years back and now they have raised rates to make up for the losses. I bet Rush didn't mention that, did he? I remember when Ralph Seekins was pushing the same BS.

But, by all means, keep pushing that old chestnut that it's the Evil Lib Lawyers that is causing this problem.

You're like a walking talking point...

Can't we just talk like pirates, and tell the matie to walk the plank?? It's so much easier than political discussions that eventually lead to a game of partisan ping-pong.

I'll bring the fake eye patches, stuffed parrots, crutches made from crooked aspen limbs, swords, a wench or two, and the rum...

I have worked in the aviation industry for the last 20 years and do you know what cost has gone up the most, insurance. In the early 90s the companies that made private aircraft were all sued out of existence by people like this. Get a stupid jury, tell them how much the kids miss their dad and it's a multimillion dollar payday for the law firm. And just what issue do we agree on, tort reform, which was enacted for general aviation, allowing aircraft manufacturers to restart production or that everything is Bush's fault?

Dirk forget the eye patch and the crutches. But if you are going to supply me with a wench and some rum, what time does the party start?

Dirk - careful now - seven51 after getting drunk at your party with rum you supplied might have to come back and sue you for the injuries he sustained when he fell at your party. There's also the trauma and embarrassment he suffered from the STD he got from one of your "wenches".

It's not like it would be hard for seven51 to find a lawyer - just look on the back of one of the seven or eight phone books we get.
