Letter to the Editor
Obama and Alaska

To the editor:
Now that Obama is going to be the new commander-in-chief, what does this mean for Alaska? Will Obama choose to reduce the military status in Alaska? If he did, what would that mean for Fairbanks? Will he choose to try to block the natural gas pipeline out of revenge to try to hurt Sarah Palin? I believe these are the things Alaskans are going to face in the next four years. What say you Fairbanks?

Ken...Ken....Ken....!
I really HATE to be a smartass at times, but some people make it so worthwhile, and fun at the same time.
Back away from the computer, and please think "once, twice, three times a lady" before you click "post comment" from now on.
Are you kidding me?
Barack Obama goes through all this to get elected President, and now its time for "get back?" Revenge?
"I'm gonna get all them damn people that said bad things about me, starting with that Palin woman."
Yeah! That's the ticket.
With all the pressing issues affecting this country, Ken, I think you can sleep well at night knowing that reducing the military here in Alaska may not be at the top of his "to do" list.
And "blocking the proposed natural gas pipeline out of revenge to try and hurt Sarah Palin?"
Lord have mercy....what's next?
Obama must support Indian Country in Alaska!
Ken... put down the peace pipe it is making you paranoid!
Ken,
Sorry, I share your concerns but it's way to soon to start with the "I told you sos...". The bottom line up front is that while some of us are afraid of what Barack Obama will do, we just don't know (and more to the point, too many people in the United States either don't believe he will do those things or don't care if he does).
We had our chance to warn the voting public before the election and it "didn't take" - now we'll just have to wait and see. I hope, as I'm sure you do, that things won't be that bad but we're just going to have to wait and see. You might want to buy a couple of boxes of bullets while you still can but other than that, there's nothing else we can do now...
Ken, you must be used to politicians who are petty and/or have lots of time on their hands. I seriously doubt that Obama has given much thought at all to Alaska, one way or the other. And why would he need to 'get back' at Mrs. Palin? SNL and the entire country already did that, through laughter. As far as military installations, Alaska is vitally important to our national defense, so why would they be closed? After all, Russian Pres. Medvedev can see Alaska from his house.
What will Obama do? He always gave the same old vague, lawyer-like responses to questions. He tried to give everyone the answer they wanted. I cannot believe the people voted for him. It would seem he cannot even figure out what the family will get for a whitehouse dog.
A leader must be able to make decisions. Obama is just like clinton, unable to make a decision until he has heard from the focus groups.
The comments should stop with OldSkool - it's the perfect response.
"The comments should stop with OldSkool - it's the perfect response."
Only for those who've already drunk the koolaide...
Oh now Birdie, where's the fun in that? After all, we Palinbashers got our shots in. Let's give the Demophobes a chance too.
"Demophobes???"
Hadn't thought of that word but I guess it works.
I reject the term "Homophobe" (at least in so far as anyone who would want to apply it to me) because I neither hate nor fear homosexuals. Democrats, however - especially the Left-Leaning, Socialist, Tax Everybody More, Lets Spend More on Every Conceivable Government Program, and Oh Yeah, Let's Ban Guns and Add a Prohibitively Expensive Tax to Ammunition (so no one can afford to buy it for the guns they already have) Democrats - do scare me (so, maybe, Demophobes does apply).
"We had our chance to warn the voting public before the election"
lol, warned? more like paranoid drivel from frightened little people.

"ohhh my I'm sooo scared because one of them dark people is president and he's a terrorist, a communist, a Muslim, the antichrist, etc. etc."
Incredible, the amount of people willing to humiliate themselves by publicly stating their "fears" of Obama is staggering, you people are totally unwilling to see any type of logical reason or have any common-sense. You have all been duped by another repub mud slinging machine and are trying to pass it off as "something I came up with on my own", BS, the repubs once again LIED to your faces with no shame,
And y'all took the bait, hook, line and sinker (the election is OVER)
GET A LIFE SCHIZOS!
Well, it's common knowledge that Palin goes out of her way to punish people who have the audacity to vote for her opponent, and Young has stated on camera that he only represents the people who vote for him. I haven't heard anything of the sort about Obama so I doubt it'll happen.
I don't think Obama is vindictive, or that he'll come after Sarah. That's her MO, not his. I do fear though, that he'll escalate the war in Afghanistan, and that he won't hold the criminals in the White House accountable for the trillion dollar slaughter of over a million people who weren't a threat to us. It's the crime of the century but they'll get off scott free. He's one of them. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, and their lying cronies are war criminals who lied, tortured, and murdered, to rob the American people of over a trillion dollars for a war-for-oil-profit that should never have happened. They also robbed the taxpayers for the so-called bailout money on their way out, which has gone to CEOs and other wealthy people while they leave homeowners in the dust. Bush and Co. also changed the very nature of our domestic law, effectively giving the executive branch the power of a king. So, in my opinion, Obama isn't nearly "vindictive" enough. And no, I wouldn't consider him holding the criminals accountable "vindictive". I'd consider it justice, and that will happen when pigs fly.
According to the press, Al Qaeda knows what Obama is.
I wouldn't worry about Obama he'll let us drill for oil and open are resources he'll just tax the hell out of it like he said about the coal industry and have a lot of government regulations to render it impossible to do any thing in are state. So I wouldn't worry about Obama.
I would like to know how do you bury your guns and money when the ground is frozen?I wish to move to Alaska but I need to know how you dig a hole in frozen ground. Otherwise I will stay in Idaho. Alaska seems more suited to me though.
you use a weed burner to thaw the ground first. it's laborious and time consuming, but it works. dunno, think i'd want quicker access to those guns anyhow. i don't predict a dire future for alaska so much as i do for the entire usa. soon i think things will be in such a mess in the lower 48 obama won't even remember that sarah palin and alaska exist.
Yes,Ken.Obama will close Alaska completely I'm sure it's been his plan from the get-go.So,list your home on Craigslist at a reduced or even free price, turn your guns into the authorities. If you have large flat panel T.V. I would be interested in that, turn your pets loose.Good Luck and get some sleep.
Ken's letter is well intended. Obama is opposed to and has declared that he would end the Missile Defense program. That means Ft. Greeley and by extension, Delta Junction will be shut down. 700 jobs gone and millions ($) withdrawn from the community. He will guarantee that the effort and money will have been wasted. He, along with the dhimmis, feels that intentional vulnerability is a sign of strength. I will never "get" these people. It's as if they think they can win a fist fight by leading with their chin. This only works if you've got a knife hiding behind your back. What is Obama's "knife"? What's he got in reserve? He won't have the military - they can't respect him.
I read a mixed martial arts forum called sherdog.com from time to time when I get really bored(there are better sites I get my MMA news from) and there are a bunch of 14 year olds talking trash about everything.....the newsminer is just as entertaining. Seriously.
The lies that Obama is some kind of "threat" to our country.
cmon, you didn't see the baby-talk McCain ads? they sounded like somebody either trying to talk to a baby or somebody in a care home with dementia, they were actually pretty funny to watch.
Al Qaida has finally begun the speeches against Obama. It is apparent what they think of this man. This country is in for a rough year, hopefully Bill Clinton and Hilary will do the right thing and Obama will make his speeches. Remember when Bill Clinton said we would get two for one, well Obama forgot to tell us we would get three for one and most of the Clinton staffers.
So the economic problems thus far are all Obamas fault?
He is inheriting dubyas economic nightmare, not a small task.
The man is not even in office yet, you people are just HOPING that he will fail, I at least gave dubya a chance when he was elected.
Too bad he let us all down, however, he DID make a fortune for himself.
I'm a patriot, and while I did not vote for Obama, I believe in supporting the president until he/she(someday) does something to lose my support (lying to a grand jury Clinton), (failing to close US borders Bush). As is stands now, I don't think Obama will be vindictive towards Alaska, but that of course can change.
I keep forgetting how many unhappy, end-of-roaders come to Fairbanks, paranoid to the point I can't help but laugh. It's insane to assume Obama will take "revenge" on Alaska. That says more about YOU, than it does about him. Perhaps you should talk with people in downstate Illinois, Republican Farmers who've dealt with him. That's the key, they CAN and DO deal with him.
Sarah Palin would NOT be qualified for most jobs out there, unless they require a smile and a wink. She's going to fade away, even up here.
The Great Son of a Goat Herder ““”Obama””: And the people that Support him!
As the people were cheering and dancing; at Obama Victory Speech; Obama said “At one time in the past, America was great! And the people danced and cheered!
Obama then said “We will make America Great Again, and the people danced and cheered! Then Obama said, we will make America Great “Brick by Brick” And the people danced and cheered!
It will be held together with mortar; and the people “danced and cheered!
Obama said “We will do this with Hard-Work, and Calluses!
The people STOPED dancing and Cheering, and it got really quite. They Looked at each other and said “What the H*LL is he talking about “Hard-Work, and Calluses” What about “share the wealth!
What about My Free Gas for the Car! And my Free Rent! And Free Food! What the H*ll is this man Talking about ““Hard-Work, and Calluses!
NOTE: Remember All the Great-Things that you put on the Community Discussion board about the Son of a Goat Herder,
“Obama”, it will give you something to talk about, while you’re standing in the Soup & Bread Line !
The economic crisis was a gift from Bill Clinton to George Bush. You can't get into this mess in only eight years.
Yeah Penny,Those eight years of Clinton's profitability and peace were pure Hell.
I know this is supposed to be about the effects on Alaska, but if a President Obama does away with missile defense - he can reasonably expect about 50,000 American jobs to go with it (maybe more - and if you haven't already maybe its time to give some consideration to selling that stock in Boeing). Given that he has a serious financial crisis to deal with, he may be well advised to take another look at whether or not he wants to do that.
Along with his "preemptive diplomacy" guarantee that the U.S. will be there to backstop Israel's security (see "Obama's AIPAC Speech" dated June 4, 2008"), he has insured our status as the enemy of Iran(who seems to communicate freely and get along reasonably well with Russia). When the price of oil goes back up, both of these countries will be flush with cash and the increased ability to support their views and positions on a world stage. Incidentally, if you can get your hands on a copy of the text of Ahmadinejad's speech to the U.N. General Assembly (September 2008) and have the ability to read it without prejudice, it will provide an interesting perspective on things from the Iranian (government's?) point of view.
Regardless, it would not be wise to mothball missile defense completely because there is an outside chance that the thing will work when we need it to. A potential defense is better than no defense at all. As far as Alaska (and Delta) goes, its to late for us because this thing has helped us to make the "target" list for those that would look for one in the U.S.
Oh the joys of being the President of the United States of America! Pray for this man, he needs all of the help that he can get...
Easy there Ken. Lets give the man a chance to prove himself one way or the other.
I will agree with Doug_in_Salcha though. All I want for Christmas is ammo for my guns.
