ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Sarah Palin is juggling offers to write books, appear in films and sit on dozens of interview couches at a rate astonishing for most Hollywood stars, let alone a first-term governor.
Oprah wants her. So do Letterman and Leno.
The failed Republican vice presidential candidate crunched state budget numbers this past week in her 17th-floor office as tumbling oil prices hit Alaska's revenues. Her staff, meanwhile, fielded television requests seeking the 44-year-old Palin for late-night banter and Sunday morning Washington policy.
Agents from the William Morris Agency and elsewhere, have come knocking. There even has been an offer to host a TV show.
"Tomorrow, Governor Palin could do an interview with any news media on the planet," said her spokesman, Bill McAllister. "Tomorrow, she could probably sign any one of a dozen book deals. She could start talking to people about a documentary or a movie on her life. That's the level we are at here."
"Barbara Walters called me. George Stephanopoulos called me," McAllister said. "I've had multiple conversations with producers for Oprah, Letterman, Leno and 'The Daily Show.'"
Asked whether Winfrey was pursuing Palin for a sit-down, Michelle McIntyre, a spokeswoman for Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions Inc., said she was "unable to confirm any future plans" for the show.
Palin may have emerged from the campaign politically wounded, with questions about her preparedness for higher office and reports of an expensive wardrobe. But she has returned to Alaska with an expanded, if unofficial, title - international celebrity.
John McCain plucked Palin out of relative obscurity in late August and put her on the national GOP ticket. Now, she has to decide how and where to spend her time, which could have implications for her political future and her bank account, with possible land mines of legal and ethical rules.
Palin is considering about 800 requests for appearances from December through 2009, with 75 percent coming from out of state. A year ago, just a sprinkle of requests came from beyond Alaska's borders. They range from invitations to speak at The Chief Executives' Club of Boston to attend a 5-year-old's birthday party, from a prayer breakfast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to a business conference in Britain.
Michael Steele, the former Maryland lieutenant governor who wants to be the next chairman of the Republican National Committee, is seeking face time.
She has invitations to make appearances in 20 foreign countries, typically with all expenses paid, McAllister said. She has more than 200 requests for media interviews, again from around the globe.
"She has to pace herself," suggested veteran Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman. "She wants a career made in a Crock-Pot, not a microwave."
In her two months on the national stage, Palin energized the Republican base but turned off moderates and independents, according to some surveys. Flubbed answers in national television interviews raised questions about her competence. She was embarrassed by the disclosure the RNC spent at least $150,000 for designer clothing, accessories and beauty services for her and her family.
The right book or movie deal could help Palin reintroduce herself to the nation, on terms she could dictate.
While books and movie deals could be worth millions of dollars, it's not clear if Palin would be able to legally earn it. State rules say she cannot accept outside employment for compensation. But there appears to be little in the way of precedent left by former governors to judge if book deals or lucrative speaking appearances amount to "employment."
Palin has sent unmistakable signals she is open to running for president in 2012, but to advance her political ambitions she must stay in the public eye in the lower 48 states. As with any celebrity, there is the risk of overexposure. At the same time, she'll be under pressure to attend to governing her home state, which is thousands of miles from the rest of the nation.
"She has to deal with the perception that she bobbled her debut," said Claremont McKenna College political scientist John Pitney. "She needs to stay home for a while. If she wants a future in national politics, her No. 1 job is doing a good job as governor."
Just this past week, shortly after conducting a string of national TV interviews and skipping a state education conference, she was scolded by the Anchorage Daily News. "There are ... low graduation rates, plummeting North Slope oil prices, proposals to build alternative energy projects, the gas pipeline," the paper said in an editorial. "It's time for the governor to refocus on Alaska's needs."

The woman is gross. A gross WANNABE. It's like we're continuously feeding empty carbs to a morbidly obese person. She wants this attention, and we keep giving it to her. Her ego is morbidly obese. She'll never go back to normal size...not that she ever was.
She COULD just humbly do her job as our governor and the mother of the children she close to bring into this world. But NO, that would be too pedestrian for her. She believes that it's God's will that she suck up tons of money and wave down at us from her pedestal in the spotlight. She COULD just turn down all offers and get on with her life as we (thought) we knew it. But she's the Great, the Priviledged, God's Chosen One, the wonderful Sarah Palin.
Well then, we must be God's chosen, "the Entertained"!! LOL LOL LOL etc. Bring me a huge bowl of popcorn, cos this is just going to be a riot!

I was fortunate enough to watch our Governor during a visit here in Reno Nevada and it was the most awesome experience I've ever had! I went to the event 3 hours ahead of the start time and there were so many people lined up it was worse than the lines during Black Friday at Walmart, ToysRUs and Best Buy combined. It was beyond expression how it felt as an "Alaskan" to stand in line and listening to the others in line speak so highly of our Governor (how much they admired her, the great hope they had for her, etc).
I felt so proud being Alaskan and knowing that she was OUR Governor.
When the event finally started the inside was greater than anything I could describe, with the amount of people there to listen and greet her and the warm welcome she received when she came out and began speaking to the audience of thousands!
When the ones in line around me found out that I was from Alaska and worked in her building they wanted to know what she was like, and I told them that I had the great honor to speak to her several times and that I knew her to be an amazing person and I admired and respected her for who she was and all that she did for us in the State. That in Alaska our men are strong but our women were stronger *S*
What is sad though is to know how much she is admired and respected outside of Alaska, then to come in and read the blogs in the paper here and those from the Anchorage Daily News and see how horrid people treat her within our own state. But then came to the conclusion that those who spew hateful words were most probably not true Alaskans and even a better chance that the hate and distain they felt was from within themselves and really had nothing to do with our Governor. She was merely their target for their poison.
And what's wrong with having a strong spiritual belief? I find it most honorable that her beliefs are instilled within her so strongly that she fears not speaking them in a world where few seem to hold any type of spiritual belief. And for your information SwanMom .. we are ALL "God's Chosen", except some of us are more entertaining than others =)~

Palin's 15 minutes of fame reminds me of the stories of how P.T. Barnum's Circus of Freaks used to come into town with a whirlwind of publicity, arousing immense curiosity (and ticket sales), and then when they left townsfolk somehow felt a bit emptier for having seen what was often just a faked presentation.
She's still a novelty the way any Alaskan would be. As people get to know her, though, get to realize the smallminded, hate-mongering diva she is the novelty will wear off. And just like Jojo, the Dog-Faced Boy (or more appropriately, the Fiji Mermaid which was a construct) she will eventually fade away. Everytime she opens her mouth in an unrehearsed, unscripted event she gives a little more insight into her persona and it ain't all that purty, folks.

But then sometimes a Hitler comes along whose "strong spiritual beliefs" just aren't the greatest for the rest of us. Great, she wants fame...GO GET IT but leave Alaska behind. I for one, will not tolerate her spending time on her personal endevors while Alaska swings in the wind of economic collapse. She has to make a choice NOW. Either she does the job she was elected to do or pack up and become yesterday's celebrity. I'm sure there are more qualified people just waiting for a chance to make history by making Alaska a solvent place to live.

Alfred Hitchcock couldn't have produced a better whack job than Governor Palin did on Thursday at the Wasilla Turkey Farm. She is truly not sane if she thought it was "fun". Everyone in America (including Alaska) agrees with me.
Every media outlet in the World has condemned the Turkey Shoot too. Even the people that shot the scene (KTTU) say it should never have aired. And Sarah, now that she has seen it, seems to agrees with me too!

dlcarter -- Mayabe Alaskan know her better then do the people in the lower 48. I liked her a lot better before she became Governor, and a little less as governor but than she became the VP nominee.....ahhh. Even McCain seemed to have a problem with her at the end. Anyone who has ever traveled outside of Alaska realizes the first thing anyone want to know is all about Alaska. I think that is part to the Palin Mystic.
I hope she does become a movie or TV star. Then perhaps Parnell can get things done for Alaska that need to be accomplished. Her first staring role she can say "Thanks, but no Thanks" and "I put it on ebay". two of her first fabrications that caused Alaskans problems.
Sarah stated in one interview that Todd's friends helped him build the Palin Mansion on the lake. With Ted Stevens problems it would be interesting to note when that home was built, and if friends were paid or was the labor a gift. Seems it was purchased in 2001 when she was Mayor, 2002, she was public appointee in 2003-2004, started running for Governor 2006. Also is the rumor factual that the same contractor who built her home was the contractor she, as Mayor hired to build the Wasilla sports arena, and were any deals cut.
She best make hay while the sun shines, overexposure may become a problem. I don't hate or even dislike the woman, I just no longer trust that she is seeing the best interest of Alaskans or even Americans. The world has become her mirror where she can see only herself.

Govenor Palin is as close to mentally handicapped as you can be and still take care of herself(maybe). Through a tragedy that overtook our family, Governor Palin and her husband Todd, reached out to us. It brought comfort and healing in our darkest hour. They did not know us, yet still they were there. We are forever grateful.

Apparently NoGuts/NoGlory doesn't watch anything but Fox TV. I saw some Palin speeches via several venues (including the Internet), and saw the people screaming back 'Kill him', regarding Obama. I also watched Mr. McCain's concession speech and how he shushed the people booing Mr. Obama. I watched Obama's election speech and saw how people in *his* audience cheered for Mr. McCain when his name was mentioned. This is how I want America to be... united.

Governor Palin is treading dangerous waters. She came to office on a platform of open government focused on the people; I, and many others, supported her partly based on that platform. She should stop attempting to turn herself into a national celebrity and focus on the issues that matter to Alaskans, or she will risk losing much of her support base. Let's make sure our governor knows we want the old Sarah Palin back.

Yes, Sarah Palin is a phenomenon, she definitely has charisma. But what is that? She probably doesn't read The Economist, The Atlantic, or Foreign Affairs, but what serious candidate ever did? Wilson and Stevenson were intellectuals (eggheads), but neither ever really turned the crank of the public. Wilson was an accidental president elected by the fluke of T. Roosevelt's splitting of the Republican Party in 1912. Sarah, like many charismatics, incites extremes of emotion. Intense admiration and extreme resentment. Copper_River_Red --- I understand from your posts that you may have been watching the Alaska scene for a while. I was not an original supporter of Sarah, I prefered and supported John Binkley. But bygones be bygones; what governor in Alaska history has done more in a shorter time to advance Alaska's causes than Sarah? I ask this as an objective question not expecting a biased political diatribe. There does seem to be movement toward a gas pipeline, there does seem to be a realistic dialogue regarding energy issues, and she has instigated reforms on the ethics front. Even possible mis-steps in the socalled "troopergate" issue can be seen as leading to reforms in the obfuscation of administrative procedures in the Department of Public Safety.
The words are already there... They are well known discriptors of the fans of "The One".
The minions of Mr. HUSSEIN (B.O.) are well known.

Being a 25yr+ member of the AIP, I did not vote for Sarah. When she came up here and was on Michael Dukes show, I called her and apologized for not voting for her, and promised my full support. That was when she held her libertarian views. After her venture into the national scene, I have withheld my support and disapproval, with the exception of the fact that I abhoar the fact she went down there as the religious, right wing, neo-cons savior and I do until this day. When she comes back to Fairbanks and goes on KFAR again, I will most certainly call her and ask her, is she really the Sarah Palin that was our beloved Governor prior to being tapped for the VP nomination?? If so, why did she go down to America and spout that crap that got the Republican ticket defeated this election cycle?? I am not very happy with her, and I want the Sarah we knew and loved back then to come back, and have the one on the campaign trail gone forever!!!

I see lots of comments, leftist pig, PalinLover, etc. You know, I think it's worth pointing out that we are ALL on the same team. Granted, some may be delusional but that's nothing a Thorazine drip couldn't cure. I used to be a Republican, during the days of moral dilemmas with interns. Then the pendulum swung TOO far.
All of a sudden the administration became completely intolerant of anything that wasn't written in the bible, and if the other side wouldn't agree (which the other side all-of-a-sudden became a moving target), then we'd blindly shoot at them. You know it's one thing to believe in God, it's entirely different if you have folks claiming they've got a hotline to him and make decisions based on this voice they hear that no one else can hear (that's known as a psychiatric condition) and/or are willing to make sweeping offensive statements that are aimed at a large swath of folks, not only in the US but in other countries.
It became clear to me that the current incantation of a Republican was based almost entirely on fear and greed (i.e. if it’s not in the bible or we don't understand them, shoot em they represent change... Unless they’re profitable).
Palin became the polarizing figure head for the Republican party, that so accurately captured those traits. Look, I don't think anyone can really say she's an idiot. However, it's equally hard to argue the point that if you are 44 yrs old and have trouble familiarizing yourself with the work of your predecessor such as the Bush doctrine or you’re making blanket statements about facts or people with just the tiniest thread of truth, you probably are not the person to be in a position of responsibility because you’re either ignorant or have very poor judgment.
If you analyze what Sarah did and said on the campaign trail there should be concern. Try and free yourself of assumptions and just look at the facts. If you can do that then you should be concerned. She obviously has bad judgment and when she's backed in the corner, she makes poor decisions. When you are so prideful that you can't just say, "I don't know, but I'll get back to you" and instead just make crap up that's a real problem. Would you want this person to be YOUR manager?

I was pulling for McCain and Hillary early on. Then McCain lost site of where he came from and started making rash decisions. Hillary still looked good but then Obama came in and gaining steam he represented something completely new; hope. That's something we haven't had for a long time. We’ve got a lot of fences to mend.
I know it seems easy to say, “Laugh it up; we'll get you in 012". Maybe you won't. Maybe he'll actually do a good job. If you're a hard core conservative, at that point, the only thing you've managed to do is turn yourself just a little bit more offensive and meaner. Obama isn't even in office yet... Can you try giving him a chance?
