Classy governor

To the editor:

She caught the 11 a.m. Anchorage-to-Fairbanks flight last Friday. Striding onto the nearly filled plane with one companion, dressed in a simple black pantsuit, she stopped once or twice to say “Hi,” or to wish a high school football player good luck in their game. One of the kids shyly whispered “Thanks for the $1,200.”

The governor traveled coach with the rest of us working stiffs. She didn’t seem to need a state-owned jet to get around. There was no crew of assistants or security guys surrounding her. She just seemed to be a lady with a friendly smile on her way to do something in rain-soaked Fairbanks.

Later, in the airport lobby, she walked over to a couple of GIs to offer a few quiet words. Then, she was on her way. No muss, no fuss, no fanfare.

We could use a few more like in government, couldn’t we?

We could use a governor who doesn't abuse her position to try to get her sister a leg up in a custody battle by trying to get someone fired.

We could use a governor who doesn't fire people who refuse to break the law for her.

We could use a governor who takes responsibility for her actions and doesn't let some flunky staffer try to take the blame.

We could use a governor who tells her significant other that when you call someone into the governors office, you sure do look like you are speakin for the governor.

We could use a governor who isn't Sarah Palin, who isn't anything like I hoped when I voted for her. She is a crook abusing her position for personal gain just like the rest of them.

We could use State Troopers who do not make death threats, Taser children, hunt illegally, or drive a Trooper vehicle with a beer in their hand,
    (or in their belly).

As a member of the public I would hope that Trooper Wooten would be fired, and wonder why the unions protect filth like him.

Wooten is an embarrassment to our good Troopers

Dr. C, what the hell does that mean? I know from your past posts that you're normally a joking guy, but if that's the case here, it's way over my head and to me reads like an insult.

Waits years to report crimes, can't fire people face to face, cc's "confidential" emails to her husband, and changes her story every time a new fact is discovered.

Yeah this is one classy chick alright.

It is sickening to see the governor get wrapped up in someone else's affairs, even her own sister's. Trooper Wooten is not a bad person, het does not threaten people, he does not go around tasering children, hunt illegally, or drive drunk. This is just a case of an ugly divorce. The governor tried to help out her sister, apparently it is working, the media and most of Alaska thinks that Trooper Wooten is a crooked cop. For those people that know him, he is not the bad person that the governor and the media are trying to make him out to be.

Compared to what Ted Stevens, Don Young and Frank M,and countless State representatives and past Governors and Representatives have done, this governor is an angel.

Let me ask. Would anyone here not take the opportunity to keep someone who you THINK, proven or not, is abusive away from your family?

Now a lot can be said on weather Gov. Palin did it or not. Doesn't matter to me she is still doing her job for Alaska. An error in judgment concerning using your power to keep a child safe is ok by me.

"Would anyone here not take the opportunity to keep someone who you THINK, proven or not, is abusive away from your family?"

The biggest problem I have with that line of reasoning is that Gov. Palin didn't think it was abusive when it occurred, it was only after the divorce got ugly did she file complaints.

She waited years to report the illegal moose kill, of which her father helped butcher and she and her husband recieved 1/3 of the meat.

Everything was just fine until the divorce. When the punishment she felt Trooper Wooten deserved was handed down, she abused her position as governor to illegally try to have him fired. When that failed, she fired Monegan for not firing Trooper Wooten. Now she is in trouble.

If Trooper Wooten is as big a dipstick as he has been made out to be, he'll screw up again and get canned for the right reasons. A custody battle with her sister is not a good reason to get canned.

I am surprised at the detractors of Gov. Palin's. I guess you cannot please all of the people all of the time. Gov. Palin, just hold the course, your support is strong and unwavering. You ARE an angel compared to the crook that preceded you. Thanks for your leadership.

Preston: I was just playing on the old line, "Yes, she's pretty, but can she type?" It is, of course, disgustingly sexist, and I was looking to mock the sexist pig stereotype by adopting it. Then again, my wife says I can be a real sexist pig so maybe I'm mocking myself. Also, I was mocking the way Governor Hottie (who I voted for, by the way, and would do so again) sometimes gets the easy treatment for being a looker. Mostly, though, I'd had a couple of drinks before I went online. Always a potentially stupid move.

This is a long-winded way of saying that if you have to explain a joke, it probably wasn't funny. Oh well. Won't keep me from trying again.

    TAC-

It never does, does it? If I reduced men they way you do women, there'd be a real reason for people to call me the names they do.

Fortunately, I love and respect men. It's the ignorant people I don't like and at least I take equal opportunities to call out those people--- men and women alike.

Remember the woman who was dragged to death downtown? After one of the news stories about that accident, Preston Lancashire posted a comment that said, in its entirety, "What a drag."

And now he's the good taste police?

I am not displeased at all with how she is doing as the governor of alaska and I sure as hell don't want Frank back.

I am just soooooo damn tired of politicians abusing their positions for personal gain. We have state legislators going to prison (and likely more on the way there), we have Ted Stevens indicted (I think he'll get convicted), we have ongoing investigations into criminal activity.

I want a corruption free government. I want politicians who don't view their jobs as "what can I get out of this office?".

Everything out there concerning Gov. Palin and this whole stupid situation points to yet one more politician who is abusing the trust placed in them by their constituents.

Not a problem, Bedasse. I was in much the position that Dr. C was in -- too much to drink before going online. That, and I held and still hold the position that you're better off laughing at something than crying over it if it's not something you can control. I simply didn't get the joke in this one, but I knew it had to be there. Thanks for the explanation, Dr. C!

    Wow, that was funny....

I took the comment "can she type?" as a direct reflection on our common bond and the fact that we, the newsminer people, often make fun of people like linkQ, who cannot type, read, or write.

It wasn't until somebody mentioned gender that I even thought about sexism.

    Introspection, people. It's revealing.

I love the fact that Palin flys coach, she clearly doesn't seek out special treatment, she knows she's human unlike many other above the law Govt. officials. I'd like to thank Pat for the letter. Gov. Palin doesn't put on heirs or act like her $%*! doesn't stink, could you imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger flying coach?

Dr. C, I got it the first time and yes, it WAS funny. But maybe only to those of us with a little age on our bones.

Governor Palin is in a no-win situation. Yes, the trooper should have been removed from his post way long ago. Yes, I do have knowledge of him and his "antics" - but it's hard to prove and harder to fire a State Trooper. No, she should not have used her position to help her sister. But when you're in a no-win situation, why not take what you believe is the best, but still lousy, road?

    Just my 2 cents.
