Strange reasoning

To the editor:
Alaska Republicans are delighted with the nomination of Gov. Palin as their party’s vice-presidential candidate because she supports Sen. McCain’s avowed effort to “clean up” Congress, e.g., eliminate earmarks and corruption.
Yet this same party voted to return Sen. Stevens and Rep. Young, both tainted with corruption and princes of pork, back to Congress, when in fact, legitimate opponents (Cuddy, Parnell and LeDoux) who disavowed earmarks and are uncorrupted were available in the primary. I do not follow the reasoning.
Moreover, Gov. Palin recommended to Stevens and Young that they not run for office again because they had given Republicans a bad reputation. Hence, to maintain her integrity will she endorse Begich and Berkowitz for Congress?

I've learned that voters do not always think through the logic of why they cast their votes. Often their votes are contradictory to their needs because they do not use critical thinking or succumb to an emotional appeal and vote without engaging their brain.
Thus the nonsensical voting patterns.
Hey! Don't count on those endorsements for Democrats Mark Begich and Ethan Berkowitz from our Governor.
You saw what happened to FNSB Mayor Jim Whitaker, a registered Republican, for having the "nerve" to endorse Barack Obama, a Democrat.
Then again, I wonder how many people, deeply engrossed in the "Sarah" lovefest, and who voted to keep Stevens and Young around, would verbally "smack" Palin around for endorsing Democrats as Whitaker has?
Interesting question, since Palin's now running to be Vice-President.
Would she get the same criticism from fellow Republican Party members?
Hard pressed to believe she would. Because if she comes back to Alaska in early November defeated in her run for V.P......and Ted and Don return to D.C. victorious during the same time period, she's gonna need to keep their numbers on speed dial when the need for more earmarks arises.
She'll be calling too.....and Ted and Don...will forgive, forget that she ever asked them both to step down from their seats. And then they'll try funneling them federal dollars into the state at Palin's behest.
Come on....she may talk the "i'm just disgusted" talk, but she ain't turning them down.
Look at the "Bridge to Nowhere" fiasco.
"Yeah, I support it," went totally opposite when the proposed project became a running joke around the nation.
And she kept part of the money directed to the project anyway.
Gotta love the "stones" on the "Barracuda."
She kept the money and spent it here in Alaska. When your trying to make a name for yourself and get your message out there to the people, sometimes you got to grab on to someone who maybe isn't just like you but can help you establish yourself. Then, when you get into a position to make things happen, to implement your vision and ideas and become more independent. The bridge made no sense, and when she was able to do something about it, she did. That is politics, always will be.
As for Stevens and Young, that is Alaskans backing people they have known all their lives and appreciate what they have done for them and their state.
Former Governor Palin is a joke! now she is a puppet for someone else. I used to have respect for her until I learned she is against
our Alaska's subsistence culture.
It's not that complicated. Alaskans know and trust Senator Stevens and Congressman Young. They have served for decades and have done nothing to wrong Alaska or Alaskans. We Alaskans believe in picking sides and staying loyal. Stevens and Young have earned our respect and we turned up to show it to them.
Others come here from elsewhere in the country and try to make Alaska like whatever crappy place they came from. They're often mush-minded liberals whose fuzzy logic and drywall spines lead them to the conclusions drawn in the above letter to the editor. Well we'll still be here after you're all packed up and gone back to your particular holes. We love Ted Stevens and Don Young. When they can't physically manage their respective offices due to advanced age, we'll have to face the inevitable. Stevens and Young serve as living links to better times...the old Alaska...before Wal-Mart, before enviro-fascists, before panty-laden wussies from every socialist corner set upon invasion of our home to remake her in their own image. My only regret is that we can't have ANOTHER 40 years of their faithful service.
Do we really? I respect Sen. Stevens, but that doesn't mean I know him or love him. I respect his ability to get pork for Alaska when the Republicans are in power. I respect that he has a heck of a temper. That doesn't mean that I agree that that is how politics ought to be done.
Many who thought they knew Sen. Stevens before the indictment are feeling that they didn't really know him. Granted he is innocent till proven guilty, but it doesn't look good.
We have known of Don Young's actions for decades. I personally thought he was (and is) an embarrassment to Alaska. His putting in earmarks for a Florida developer and his association with Abramoff leave him looking pretty dirty as well.
Trust? Well I suppose we can trust them to be themselves. However to my eyes that is not a pretty sight. I certainly think we could and should do better.
Oh yes, since Democrats are going to be in power in congress Republican representatives are not going to be very effective. A new Democrat will likely have more effective power than a senior Republican that is in the minority.
I have asked many people a question similar to this letter and nobody can give me a good answer. If McCain/Palin are running on reform and are pledging to do away with earmark spending, then what is going to happen to Alaska? A large portion of the construction work in the state comes from this type of spending and it drives the economy. What happens when McCain/Palin turns off the faucet?
It is amazing to hear the half-hearted "truths" of some of you on here that should know better than to believe everything the media reports.
Non_Lemming, while it is true that the main stream media does not always report the whole truth, but that does not mean that they are always wrong either. Just because they report something that you do not like does not automatically mean that it is wrong or that there is some huge conspiracy against somebody that you favor. Some of the things being reported about Palin are fabrications, but there are many others that are 100%, irrefutable truth no matter how it is spun.
why does this mainstream media leave this letter on the online paper on for an extra day? doesn't seem to be any more popular than any other letter published. why does this newspaper continue to publish articles from these AP "journalists" that are so obviously anti-palin and pro obama? i AM going to cancel my subscription to the hard copy version of this paper, and this time newsminer don't call me once a week or so asking me to "come back". lose my phone number, ok?

Such an interesting comment, given the fact that Alaska was predominantly Democrat before the pipeline, which brought in droves of conservatives "from elsewhere" (Oklahoma, for instance) who, arguably, could be said to have made this place a lot like whatever "crappy place" they came from. I've heard many an oldtimer say this state was better before the Republicans took over.
Not to mention the Natives here long before any of this nonsense ever started.
Neither party has the monopoly on stupidity. But for outright, bald-faced lies -- even in the face of indisputable facts -- it's beginning to look like the Republicans have a lock.

You fell victim to one of the great blunders! Notice I never used the word "Democrat". I said "liberal". Tony Knowles is a Democrat, but you can't call him a liberal.
I was talking about the pointy heads who don't want any resource developed, or predators controlled. I'm talking about those that want to force everyone to ride bicycles (don't dare forget your helmet), and eat only plants (they lack central nervousness, and so have no feelings). I'm talking about the people that think your 14 year old daughter has the right to get an abortion without your knowledge or consent, but may not be given a Tylenol tablet at school. I'm talking about the people that think only police officers should be permitted to carry a gun.
It IS MOST CERTAINLY TRUE that radical liberals have hijacked the Democratic party, and that the DNC has sold its soul to MoveOn .org, Code Pink, Greenpeace, and the like.
Case in point: http://vwt.d2g.com:8081/code_pink_murder...
Now what do you suppose William Egan and Bob Bartlett would make of that???
Put THAT in your liberal pipe and smoke it!
Uhh, that's a widely discredited PHOTOSHOP job, allhaileris. Don't try to promote your misinformation and propaganda that some right-winger Photoshopped to make people mad!!!
Here's the quote from the Photoshopper:
"NOTE: The picture that was previously displayed directly above was a photoshop job. Code Pink did not march down a street with a great big sign that said “We Support The Murder Of The American Troops.” The photo was a fake and I apologize to readers for not making that clear."
Do you have anything better than fake pictures to make your points?
Bravo Polarmark, If I had a subscription I too would cancal.
