Plans emerge to spruce up borough bus stops

Published Monday, October 6, 2008

FAIRBANKS — The public bus system is lined up for a facelift.

Roughly two dozen shelters exist at various points along the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s five main bus routes. They were built two decades ago, and transportation director David Leone recently pointed out that they consist, more often than not, of “four posts and a roof” and offer people waiting for a bus little protection from wind and snow.

The plan would build shelters or fix existing infrastructure at around 50 stops.

“Our goal,” transportation director Glenn Miller said, “is to construct shelters that will provide our riders with more comfort and safety while they wait for the bus.”

The borough has lined up more than $600,000 for the project from a blend of federal and state grants. The work also will replace fading signs and schedules at points along the routes, according to a borough report.

The Borough Assembly will hold a public hearing on the proposed plan Thursday.

The bus system’s Blue, Green, Purple, Red and Yellow lines average between 13 and 19 riders per run on weekdays, numbers that shift slightly on Saturdays depending on the route.

It would really be nice if the Borough would clean up the trash and beer bottles that accumulate around these bus stops.

How about an adopt a bus stop program?

Businesses could adopt a bus stop and in turn for keeping in clean and repaired they could post an advertisement. Or we could spend over a half million dollars of taxpayer money.

Ridership will only go up, and being able to get away from the snow and windchill will help~

As a frequent bus rider, I think these suggestions are great! And perhaps just having a trashcan at all the stops would lessen the litter?? One problem I see are vagrants using enclosed shelters either to party or sleep it off. A phone line that only connects to 911 would lessen this problem as well as the possibility of theft or assault.

I would suggest anyone else who rides the bus to show up to the meeting, write a letter, send an email or just call your elected assembly members to voice your opinions.
