Temps abnormally low as chilly October begins

Published Tuesday, October 7, 2008

It’s been a while since Interior residents have had to dig out their long underwear this early in the fall — 1992, to be exact.

The high temperature Sunday at Fairbanks International Airport was 31 degrees, the first time this fall the high failed to reach the freezing mark, according to the National Weather Service. Usually, the temperature doesn’t stay below freezing until Oct. 11.

With an average temperature of 27 degrees so far this month — 8.2 degrees below the 30-year average — it has been the coldest first five days of October since 1992.

Climate change trends look at long-term changes, not a day, or a month, or even a year.
