Photo editor Sam Harrel has been at the News-Miner since October 1994. He was hired on as a part-time photo lab technician and moved into staff positions as they came open. Born and raised in Pratt, Kan., Harrel attended the University of Kansas where he received a Bachelors of Science in Journalism with an emphasis in photography. After graduation in 1985, he moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he worked as a freelance photojournalist for various newspapers and the Associated Press wire service. Looking for a change, he moved to Fairbanks in the spring of 1994. When not on assignment for the paper, Harrel and his wife, Jillian Rogers, enjoy river trips in the summer and mushing in the winter.
