It's not the price of houses, it's that 23% FEWER houses sold. I'm not seeing anything in the story about falling home prices. That being said, as more and more become desperate to unload unsold homes by winter, I think you'll see their home prices drop. I still think that if you have a nice, well-cared-for, energy efficient house in a good neighborhood, you'll get your price (as long as it's a fair price).

Cataloged - smchmataloged, please tell me there was a conservator around and you didn't just yank these out of the water and intend to let them dry out. This is why Alaska desperately needs a State Underwater Archaeologist.

Yes. In the Lower 48, the Interstate System was signed into existence by Eisenhower as a way to move troops (1st of all) quickly around the country should the need arise. The second reason for the Interstate system was to move commerce/commercial goods efficiently. The unintended consequence was the emptying of cities into suburbia because the hwys cut down on commuting time. Sure, we see (these days) lots of National Guard and Army equipment moving up and down the Interstate near here (I haven't taken a trip yet along I-80 when I haven't seen that), and you'll all be glad to know that, in spite of $4.65/gal diesel at the Flying J, commerce and semis are moving right along as well. Strangely enough, we're also still seeing quite a few RVs with tow-behinds as well as people filling up ATVs, boats, and other toys to go out on the weekend, so there's not the cutting back here that there must be up there.

I used to own a 1 liter 3 cylinder Geo Metro. I got 53 mpg without even trying. It was my screaming red death trap (I could probably slide under semis), but I loved that car. It was a 1992 model. Surely they've come up with something safer that gets that gas mileage in the 16 years that have elapsed since I bought that car (for $7,800 no less). If not.... why not? It's not like we're the only generation to have kids -- why do we think we need Yukons and Escalades. Granted, I'd have been toast if I'd hit a moose (but I wasn't in AK at the time), but I'd have been toast in a mini van or other vehicle as well. Just wondering what Detroit is waiting for since they've produced cars like this in the past......

Wind farms are ugly as sin.

Yep -- I agree, and no one talks about how much energy it takes to build a turbine (including the cost of trucking the enormous pieces to the site, building the roads, laying the lines, etc., etc., etc.). Carbon County is going to be getting 250 turbines (at last count) in the next 5 years. Wasn't there a plan for these things along the Nenana??

Oh, and I'm looking forward to the gorgeous dust-fueled sunsets as the ash/dust/debris from the volcano beings its journey 'round and 'round and 'round the world. :-) How come no one talks about dust in their climate models -- or was the Year Without A Summer after Krakatoa just an "Inconvenience?"

I thought the last two sentences were some kind of reference to the T. Bone Pickens ads that have been running here (in WY) -- do you have them up there? Pickens is proposing spending $1 trillion on wind farms from West Texas to Canada that, he says, can provide 20% of the nation's electrical power needs. We're 50 miles from the Arlington Wind Farm here (where they blew through several Traditional Cultural Properties and Vision Quest sites, but one of the tribes got a radio station out of it, so, oh well (I SUPPOSE....)), and wind's a great idea here, except you have to get it to market, so figure in the transmission lines (that are paid for by consumers, not the power generators) and other infrastructure and it'll be years before you see any benefit (huh, sounds like drilling for oil, eh? That's not to say we shouldn't try). There are a couple of people here in town with their own wind powered systems, and the drawback is that the tech's not there yet to store the power -- when the wind blows, you gotta use it. One guy my husband works with has one of these systems, and their lights are on 24/7 and they keep the tv and other appliances running, too.

Pickens is a billionaire and an oil man and a good-old-boy sounding kind of guy. At least he's trying.... and, if nothing else, getting people to talk about it. I'm sorry people are tarring him as an idiot, because I don't think you can make the money he's made by being less than intelligent.

JustMe--I read your comment too fast and had this great mental picture of Sinnott darting the moose-petter in the bottom and relocating him, too. :-) I remember a video from Anchorage that an NPS ranger sent around (not knowing what a Snuff Film is, apparently) with a guy just walking out of a building and being kicked to death by a moose that he didn't even see before it attacked (I'm thinking it was from a security camera, and I'm also remembering that it had something to do with UA). What part of "wild animal" are these guys not getting??

endoftheroad--well, OF COURSE, Alaska's just a big, friendly park, and, as we all know, NOTHING bad can happen in a (National) park! :-) (tongue FIRMLY planted in cheek). That's why Chad's Tundra "Alaska: Step Out of the Bus and Into the Food Chain" is one of my all-time favorite t-shirts. :-)

I thought you could pay wait staff below minimum wage because of "tips." I can remember (here in the WY, at least) seeing wait staff ads starting at $3.25/hr plus tips. Is it different there? :-) It may be spelled incorrectly, but I thought "costomer" was kind of cute. :-)
