AKStoryteller - I was there that night, and there was A LOT more involved in that accident than frost heaves and lack of guardrails. Even today after the Steese has been redone there is no guard rail at that spot in the highway.

Wisecheif - As much as we would all like to keep MAST here they are they last operating MAST unit in the US right now. Every other unit has been deployed or reassigned. As much as we hate to admit it, the US is involved in a war right now, and MAST is first and foremost a Military asset, and when called to duty they have to go.

It's not like they are eliminating the MAST program all together, when it was first announced that MAST would be leaving the military said that when they return from their deployment they will go back to doing medevacs and rescues for civilians if they can.

On-duty firefighters can't just leave the fire truck at the station.

I like the idea of hybrid police vehicles, my biggest concern would be if they are durable enough for police use.

I love how just because someone admits that they drive and use their cell phone at the same time it automatically means they must drive drunk also. I, like aksheep, do not drink. I have also never been in an accident. You know what they say about assuming.....

"Alcohol was determined to be a contributing factor."

It doesn't say he was drunk does it? Lets stop jumping to conclusions.

I think every single time I have ever been to the airport there has been an Airport Officer in the immediate area. If people are parking in the special cab spot, it seems like it would be much more efficient for the cab driver to go talk to the officer rather then getting in a screaming match with someone. It's pretty easy to tell who wins those, the guy who is already parked there.

As for handicapped parking, my hope is that more will be added as things get reorganized.

it's almost too bad that there couldn't be a separate drop off/pick up point for tour buses so they don't have to park in front of the main terminal. When I was at the airport recently to pick someone up there was a bus literally in the middle of everything and it was making the area almost impossible to maneuver.

On Prescribed burn rained out despite local, national coverage

Rain doesn't put out fires in Alaska, the fire gets into the moss and smolders until it gets hot again. In areas with solid dirt there is no where for the fire to hide from the elements so rain can have more of an impact. With many Alaskan fires (especially in the northern 1/2 of the state) it's only when the humidity level in the fuel rises and stays high that the fire will burn itself out.

In many areas of the state that works well since there are no buildings/villages/military sites to protect. The State and Feds just monitor the fire and make sure it doesn't get into any of the Modified or Critical protection areas. Closer to town though, fires have to be fought, and knowing the best way to clear the vegetation around a structure to prevent fire spread without clear cutting is very important for homeowners that don't want someone to take one look at their house and say "unsaveable" and walk away.

Do NOT get me started on people who don't use their turn signals. There is very little that pisses me off more that someone who doesn't use them.
