I would agree with Mr. Adasiak and ask (as usual) that we be given more information so we can weigh in intelligently on whether the state's regulations are truly too intrusive.
However, Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole, said he senses a growing and “legitimate” interest among cities and boroughs to avoid the state’s reporting requirements. He said the rules may make community leaders reluctant to serve on advisory boards and commissions, particularly in small towns.
Why? What are they afraid of, or embarrassed about? Corrupt officials/politicians don't jump to the big issues right away, they start one small step at a time. Maybe it's best to catch the pattern earlier rather than later.

The September 5th News Miner article stated, "The city is searching for alternative revenue with energy costs taking a toll on the tourism industry and the tax cap limiting a major source of property tax revenue. But Fairbanks Mayor Terry Strle said she has no intention to annex any property strictly for additional revenue during her tenure."
And yet in this article Gatewood throws back the curtain and shows what this is really about - a pure and simple money grab.
I hope the LBC shows more wisdom when weighing in on this matter. Quite frankly, I think this is an embarrassing move by the city council.

Thanks for making a public request that the mayor clarify this issue and give us some insight into the big picture and what's really being addressed.

Rockee - thanks for explaining the grant process. I also extend kudos to FPD for being awarded the grant, it shows forethought and hard work on the department's dedication to keeping our streets a little safer.
akgg - do some research, see how many people in Fairbanks have been killed by gang-related activity vs. alcohol related activity.
Hopefully, with the most recent gang activity showing up on the radar, FPD is looking at ways to increase funding so they may help deal with that issue too.

user6244 - you're only looking at one page of that site - there is a whole page dedicated to Obama. It actually looks pretty balanced.

I can understand (which doesn't mean I necessarily agree) annexing the properties that, by virtue of their location, already fall within city limits but Fred Meyer's doesn't fit this model. Simply moving westward to gobble up businesses can only be seen as a way to increase the revenue base. Why else do it?

"Republican incumbent Don Young holds a thin lead against his challenger, Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell. Young so far has 42,397 compared to Parnell, who received 42,548 of the ballots cast."
Umm, what's wrong with this picture??

Once again the News Miner can't answer the simple questions of who, what, where, when and why and leaves its readers to speculate about what abuses are occurring and by whom. Most of us know (and understand why) the police and fire departments have leeway but who else is allowed to take vehicles home and use them for personal business? And why? Unless you're TRYING to incite the inflammatory comments that follow these articles, you might try covering some of the basic journalism principles so your readers don't have to fill in the blanks.

Kiki - as you pointed out, hope and idealism are essential to positive change - thanks for your input to the energy pool.
