While there is a lot of disagreement on this story, I don't think any of us posting in this thread would call wooten a good cop.

It depresses me how utterly screwed up the alaska state troopers are when it comes to dealing with the bad apples. And now, if palin wants to "fix" that system, she'd get attacked as trying to punish them for something.

The troopers are broken. Too easy to get in. Too easy to stay in.

This is capitalism, the great side is the unions getting obscene amounts of money, the bad side is when that formula crashes and the unions drive the companies into bankruptcy, so that the auto manufacture can restructure and void the obviously-insane labor contracts, and the cycle starts over again.

bailing out automakers to extend this cycle is absolutely unnecessary. Once the automakers can declare bankruptcy, the can void the labor contracts that say they can't close factorys that make parts that go into cars that don't sell. They can re-gain the agility they've lost. That lack of ability to respond to the market is a big part of their downfall.

again, bankruptcy does NOT mean the automaker dies. It basically means that unions and creditors can stop dictating what the company does. This means automakers can do what needs to be done to get back into shape....... if they don't get bought out first!

If standard procedure is a lockdown, a "planning" badguy will realize that the school immediately turns into a secure environment, minimizing his ability to inflict as much harm as possible.

If standard procedure is evacuate and fill the hallways and take them outside, a "planning" badguy has a turkey shoot. No security, no locked doors, everyone in the hallways and streaming outside into huge groups trying to ask each other whats going on.

This also simplifies what the students have to be aware of. If anything goes wrong at school, it's a lockdown and they know the drill. On the other hand, an evacuation that no one's ever done before.... How would it be done without making a huge group of vulnerable kids, while making it simple enough that everyone could do it perfectly, and making sure every kid is accounted for?

I don't think the students and teachers have much of a problem with it, but parents rightly feel anxious. I dont think that sentiment should go so far as to potentially compromise the safety of everyone at the school.

Maybe they ordered too much and were trying to get a refund. Like a weed-walmart with an awesome return policy.

Prostitution is part of the history of fairbanks. Wonder why so many streets have female names? There's a reason for it!

I fundamentally disagree with members of the media, and especially entire newspapers, with endorsing candidates. It's a huge conflict of interest, with that interest being balanced reporting.

Alaska Airlines goldstreak service is the best if you've really got a time-sensitive package. It's nice to be able to put a package on a certain plane and have it be picked up when the plane arrives.

merging means the police force would have to double, as then we wouldn't qualify for AST protection outside of the city as we currently have. I think that ten million a year (a guess) right there pretty much negates any small improvements in overhead.

The only way it would work is if the borough cracked into smaller pieces, then merged with the city. This is the difference between fairbanks and those other places with merged government.

I dont understand why people who live in fairbanks oppose the annexation... I don't think a lot of people realize how it works. The wider the tax base, the less everyone pays, because the total amount of tax income is capped. Crazy example, if the city were to increase it's border size, and pick up an extra 1/4 in total property value, everyone's property taxes would drop by that 25%.

The advantage of merged government is everyone who conceivably uses the city (surburbs included) must pay for the city, so the tax base is large because you can't live 2 miles away and commute, and avoid the city property taxes.

In some respect, annexation and merging are very similar, and both do achieve the same goal. And lets face it, university west? Those are city dwellers and users just on the other side of the border. a real annexation is the quickest way to drop property taxes for most people, except those who decided to build on the other side of the imaginary line so they could mooch.
