Well, jak, that is your opinion. A trooper should certainly give someone a ticket for driving too fast for conditions if they lose control of their vehicle due to the conditions, regardless of the speed they were traveling at the time or whether they crashed or not.

I have run the gamut of vehicle types and abilities in winter conditions. I enjoy no type of driving more than winter driving (in any vehicle), and I can safely say that my statements above are tried and tested. My driving speed is certainly not always on the top of the bell curve on winter roads - in fact, it rarely is these days - but I am always going safely. Sometimes, when I have to venture out in my old 2wd pickup with well-aged tires, even 25 is questionable on the same roads I would have driven a Blizzak-banded Subaru with ease at the speed limit.

Like Dondi mentioned, one must have a feel for the interaction of the vehicle and road conditions, then mate that to their driving speeds and skill level. The road always sets the starting parameters - you just have to respect that... and test it so you know where you stand! I always start my driving day out by running a brake/acceleration test.

Oy, not a good start to the comments....

First, Scotty is right on. Mr. Eshleman is demonstrating, daily, his poor reporting skills.

Next, offering up the statement "slow down when the roads are icy" is generalized and meaningless; it certainly has no impact upon driver behavior. Yes, all should demonstrate caution, but doing so is a matter of driving within the capabilities of the driver and vehicle. That may mean, for instance, I might drive 35 down Farmer's Loop in a 4wd with poor tires, or it could mean I drive 50(+) down the same road in a FWD with new Blizzaks. Either way, I am probably going to annoy another driver on the road (either the one(s) I hold up or the one(s) I pass), but at least I am doing so with caution and arriving at my destination safely. Drive within your capabilities and do so with courtesy - regardless of where you fall on the bell curve that day.

Thanks for the reply, Kristen.

Still, for a family on a tight budget, those are rather steep fees just to let someone else profit off them. I have a tote full of circuit boards I am less and less likely to reuse, but I think they will just have to stay put for now.

Good luck with the effort!

If that is the case, Isanova, then it is due strictly to poor management within the government.

I am not sure where or when it went awry, but the intent of government is to work *for* the people.

Hmmm, so I am not sure I understand correctly. Is this a fee-based collection program, or just a collection program? If it is fee-based, then please clarify the costs, as those listed are limited and vague.

I think it is a rather difficult time of year to convince people to venture out and then pay to give you their possessions. But, maybe that is just my cynical side getting the best of me. Again.

I have fears going into winter this year, but it has nothing to do with my personal cost of fuel. It has to do with my sanity, and the cabin fever I will most likely suffer due to my inability to enjoy the outdoors at home this year. With all the new wood stoves being installed around me, the air will most likely be highly troublesome to inhale.

I'm sure that your wood boiler runs at higher efficiency (and therefore lower emissions) than the wood stoves of my neighbors, but that cannot be said for all who installed wood-burning devices this year.

I don't mind burning 3-400 gallons of diesel at 95% efficiency. I don't mind my neighbors burning wood. What I mind is the smoke. Is there not technology available to address it? I have a feeling that this winter will be the worst (in terms of air pollution) that we have seen in many years.

I am not liking what Berkowitz had to say about the issue, and I doubt it will strengthen his support for office.

This is a pickle, no doubt, but I think a bailout such as this is just another nail in the coffin.

user - as long as you still have the shares, they may yet rebound. The shares is only if you pull it when it has less value that you actually lost money.

This one may hurt, but I agree with the 'no' vote from the House. And Young voted with the majority - wow!

The market can and will sort out, but as part of the economy, we should all feel the impact of decisions made amongst us. Awareness and concern are not bad things; it was apathy that brought us here.

Mr. Eshleman, well done on failing to relate the rest of the events at last night's assembly meeting. Did you run out of time, or was there not room in the paper? If it is the latter, perhaps the News-Miner should consider printing fewer of those redundant "letters to the editor."
