Does anyone know IF the oil and gas industry knows how to clean up an oil spill in ice conditions? I don't think the technology exists. This is an issue that Shell has with drilling in Bristol Bay waters as well as the Beaufort Sea. I have to be convinced that Shell knows how to clean up oil covered ice. Then my position on drilling off-shore Alaska may change.

This is a misleading story because it does not adequately analyze the connection between the cost of living, job access, lack of economic
activity, and the high cost of energy.

I think that the First Alaskans Survey may be flawed. I say 'may be' flawed because I did not see a copy of the survey that was sent.

It is clear in my mind that energy costs drive the cost of food, clothing, closing of our schools, housing costs, electricity, heat, hunting and fishing, and migration from our villages.

This story, I think, is giving the wrong impression of what is driving our people out of our villages.

With people in our villages paying $8 to $10 a gallon for heating fuel and gasoline, electricity as high as 90+ cents a kwh, what else can people do but move to find a place to live with lower energy costs?

Again, the Railbelt gets the energy raters first and Rural and Remote Alaska have very few. We could use the energy savings because we are paying $6 to $10 a gallon for heating fuel. If all of our homes were energy efficient, we could save a ton of money. I hope the state will fund the program again next year and maybe, just maybe, there will be enough energy raters to attend to our villages.

Dirk, you have a responsible to start legal proceedings and move this into a court of law so that all sides have an opportunity to prove or disprove any of the statements you have made. Anything less than taking action is a waste of time.

Mark has very, very, big senatorial shoes to fill and I am hoping that he will do as well as his dad did as a U.S. Representative in Congress. I have my doubts about how Senator Stevens was prosecuted but now he does not have to go through the embarrassment of being stripped of his senatorial perquisites. He did a great job for us while there and I always got a response to any inquiry I had about our government. He never forgot the little guy. And finally, best wishes Senator-Elect Begich.

Excerpt from AlaskaPhil:I see many accusations here against almost any politician about whom a story has been written. Political jokes and snide comments aside,
where's the proof and what are the specifics? Step up and represent, or stand down.
Where have there been trials, or even formal charges?
Here we see words like corruption, federal indictment, cheating, stealing, crook -- and
NO specifics! Tossing this around is cheap, possibly libelous, and evidence of a paucity of expression.
C'mon, show us where these charges are proven, or at least formally filed.
I agree with AlaskaPhil: Where is the indictable evidence of all the hateful statements in the blogs in this story? I am not especially fond of what Governor Murkowski did as governor, but I have not seen incontrovertible proof of any sort that would allow me to think of him as a crook. If such evidence exists, then it is the responsibility of the writers of these blogs to get this information to the proper authorities so that legal proceedings can ensue. Words without proof is less than garbage.

I hope that the Nenana gas project is successful and I hope that there is sufficient gas to go beyond the Railbelt. A state-wide energy grid tying into a gas fired generator could provide energy that could go north, west, and southwest if there is sufficient gas for that to happen. Alaska has tremendous energy potential and Nenana gas would increase Alaska's ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy that is needed in communities currently paying very high costs for electricity using diesel. Several mining projects in SW Alaska could use Nenana energy to make those operations possible. Donlin and Pebble cannot operate without adequate, reliable, low-cost energy.

If the Susitna comes to fruition, it could provide low cost energy for most, if not all, of our communities with a state-wide energy grid. I am hopeful that projects like this can be encouraged so that all Alaskans can enjoy long-term, reliable, and affordable energy so that we can attract economic development activity, create new jobs, provide new tax bases, and move all of our state into the 21st century using renewable and clean energy sources.

Good for the state. It is about time we began to assert our sovereignty over the oil and gas industry. We have been under their thumb for too long and it is time for the oil and gas industry to do things our way. Exxon had a over 30 years to develop the gas field but they sat on their thumbs. Well, they made their bed, now they cal sleep in in it.
