We're a military family who has been here for two years and we purposefully do not apply for the PDF because we don't feel it's right collecting money without the intention of living permamantly in Alaska. So many(!!) military collect it and then hardly ever return to Alaska- the PDF is perceived as free money to them. I don't know all the laws etc which regulate the PDF but it just seems to me that it needs to be tightened up a bit so that the military who do swing throught the state on short 2-3 year assignments don't walk out with a lifetime of free money to pocket from a state to which they usually never return.

PS- Plus, we live on base so we get free heat in the houses already... so you military folks who live on base and still collect and never will return you're giving the rest a bad name- why don't you just say you're on welfare and be done with it.

CHILI's nevermore- No more needs to be said- if you've been there you know what I'm talking about.

Even if they do make a killer creme brulee, I do not go to PIKES LANDING anymore for dinners- however, the Sunday brunch is fine but not a place to go if you want to have a conversation bc its loud and busy-

The NP Wendys is a good, well run fast food joint. (tip to Wendys: clean the ornaments on the trees- they get greasy....)besides that everything else seems super clean.

The Thai restaurant in NP next to the tanning salon has good pad thai but the most indifferent waiter ever! And would it kill them to play some music in the joint? It's called ambiance people- maybe more would patronize the biz if made to feel welcome.

Pagoda is of course the standard to which all should aspire- good service and good food.

Have you guys tried the sandwiches at the Fred Meyers snack bar deli by the box stores? OMG go eat there bc I kid you not- crazy best sandwiches...

The problem with bad customer service I think is a combination of plentiful jobs in the area which pay more than the food services pay plus unqualified managers perhaps running restaurants. Period. I don't think we should say that we have bad service because we're an 'outpost city.' How is that an excuse?

(As an aside, I also dispute the sterotype of Alaskans as being a 'bunch of rejects and losers running away from something' as to why we can't have a good dining experience. Fairbanks does have a great cast of colorful characters which makes it a great(!) place to live and it's also home to a large and wonderful military population as well as being a college town too.)

Maybe, Woodman, the new Miner SHOULD have a food critic column- for the price of eating out these days we should have some kind of accountability from the restaurants and their piss poor management.

And yhea, what about Brewsters and Food Factory saying they support the troops but don't offer discounts- what is up with that?!?

I still vote Pagoda as the best in customer service and value for money - all other restaurants could take a lesson from how they operate a business which values its customers- it's the only place you'll go to on a Monday night and find it busy.

Here's a few thoughts about recent dining out experiences....

*Best service and all around restaurant goes to PAGODA- service is consistantly good, food is served quickly and hot, and portions are huge. Owner is usually present and situationally aware of things going on in the dining room.

*Grossest dining experience was TACO BELL in North Pole- the teens there wore the filthiest clothes and one greasy teen kept complaining about bug bites on his scalp as he itched his head under his dirty hat- ugh, never eating there ever!

I'd like to hear more about everyone's best and worsts....

We bought 6 tickets and will enjoy every minute of going to a great concert with our closest friends and we're going to have a blast. The fact that we're seeing Elton John in lil ole Fairbanks is hysterical. It will be a great memory maker.
Thanks Elton!

A Down's baby is as sweet and wonderful as any child born- what a lucky little guy to be born into such an amazing family. All his older brothers and sisters will dote on the sweet baby boy- he will always be well loved.

Congrats to the Palins and good luck!
