Great article! I love the bats! I can't wait to show the kids this.
We had more bats this summer than usual. A few times they were swarming us, a bunch of 'em, flying right in front of our faces, then up and around! Happily eating the skeeters!
They eat spiders?! Crazy! Well, my girls'll like to hear that! Personally, spiders don't bug me.
I have been wanting to build a bat house for years in the hope of attracting more and getting them to stay. Maybe they're holed up in that old shed out back. I know the squirrels had been getting into the roof for years...maybe they share with bats...?
I hope somebody does do some studying on this. We would love to know what's up with the bats, and how to attract more and get them to stay.
Also, I miss my flying squirrels. Think too much land got cleared. Bummer.

Well, Dermot's column today helps out a lot.
I knew this, but I didn't know the exact pay scales.
Teachers do not have to continue their education. They are being paid pretty darn well, and more than one way to get raises.
By being there, (seniority), step raises, ( If they want more money, they take extra classes for which they apparently pay--gee, not an unreasonable proposition), and union extortion.
Sounds like they already have a plenty fair deal, just as many of us have said.

Yes, and add to that an investigation of the power and control and abuses and coverups the troopers and their union perpetrate on Alaska.
A bunch of these people on here are utterly obsessed. It seems they think about nothing else and have nothing else to do.

Pinhead...
What? Read again, please.
Look, I don't have time to comment as fully as I wish to today. I want to respond to brassmonkey, who at least made sense, and a proper response to him/her will take too much time.
Maybe tonight, if I get the time and feel like it.
As for the above, that's just dumb.

Also, pay should be based on merit. I'm with glacierles. Give us vouchers, and a real choice (unlike the misplaced blame choice of the letter writer), and then we'll see who deserves the raises...

Agreed polarmark.
And most of us don't have the ability to extort more money for ourselves from the government.
Talk about teaching the kids! Nothing like placing blame and guilt trips on others. Using the kids as pawns, and feigning "passion" and "calling" 'cause it's all about the children, dontcha know.
Nobody is forcing any teacher to choose between anything. Adults take responsibility for their choices. Who is behaving like a "spoiled child?"
A few of my kids, at times when they were attending government schools, on several occasions have had teachers whine in class about not making enough money. I could give a long list of teachers' failings.
Strike. Please! Then give 'em the Reagan treatment! Oh, how I wish!
But, it'll never happen, because the teachers hold the pawn/extortion key.
Up on the hill, I've talked to lots of kids going to school to be a teacher, and many who are undecided, but considering teaching.
Non were out of a calling. All were about the money and schedule. And that teaching is one of the easier routes to a degree.

What, batman_ak, you mean like those that are not in the aristocracy of government employ? Poor things!...not.
That, indeed, is one of the best things those two did.
And they don't get SS because they can opt out and have a different system. From what I hear, it's a lot better than SS; more stable and reliable.

brassmonkey-
Arctic Village, Venetie, Fort Yukon, etc. are nowhere near ANWR. The people who live there are Eskimos and they support drilling.
It is disingenuous to suggest that there are also Indians there.
But I know the argument. The Porcupine herd changes patterns through years. I believe, and I think science supports this, the herd will adapt. In fact, I can't remember, but it seems I read some time back that it doesn't exclusively calve there, and has already been changing there.
I wonder how the Athabascans would feel if a bunch of people from, say, Fairbanks or DC or Florida, argued that they should have as much or more say in what goes on in the Gwich'in's back yard?

Government employees don't have to worry about it. They get a guaranteed pension, don't they?
And I think Alaska gov workers get to opt out of SS for a separate and better plan.
