Good Job, UAF Campus Police officer! I'd rather trust my safety to the campus police than that of some other LEO's:

One of our local city (not campus) gendarmes once pursued a bicyclist off city streets into campus because the bicyclist ran a red light. He was so keen to stop the miscreant that he drove his city patrol car off the street and up onto the plaza in front of the student center. In spite of the hundreds of students milling around on the plaza, he pursued the bicycle, stopping it by shoving his nightstick into a wheel. The bicyclist went to the hospital with a concussion. The officer was unable to justify his poor judgement in continuing the pursuit.

Great consistency, Alaskans - let's waste lots of fuel blasting away at wolves from the air to increase the population of caribou, and then kill off the caribou anyway by drilling in their grazing grounds. Let's keep driving around in big 4X4 trucks on the roads and zooming around the off-road in our snowmachines and ATV's. When is everyone going to realize that we can't solve our petroleum problem solely by drilling? When gas goes to $12 a gallon, maybe finally we can get the outsider SUV & truck drivers to park their flashy gas-guzzlers & DO something about the energy crisis!

Lance, I am so VERY sorry about Zorro. We'll keep him and you in our prayers.

This is the second serious March 2008 incident involving a snowmobile hitting and killing or badly injuring dogs participating in major organized races. Jennifer Freking's Iditarod team was hit by a snowmobile. One of her dogs was killed and another had to be flown out for treatment. Now one of Lance's dogs, his kennel's main stud Zorro, is badly injured by another irresponsible snowmobiler speeding down the trail, oblivious to all Lance's attempts to attract his attention. The trail should be closed to snowmobiles during races! People wanting to follow the action should travel by dogsled if they can't stay far enough away from the trail to avoid hitting teams and sleds with snowmobiles.

So far, there have been no dogs that died. It's uncommon for dogs to die during the Quest. Give it a rest!
