As it has been stated, regulate the profession (the doctors and staff and services)and not the competition. It doesn't help that an employee of FMH is a member of the state legislature and has been a vocal proponent of the C.O.N. helping to squash competition for his employer. Also I never could understand the concept of a not for profit hospital "foundation" (FMH) being managed by a for profit company (Banner Health). FMH has a monopoly in this town and has done everything possible to eliminate competition. the attitude at FMH for the most part in my experience has been about money, where other places I've been; for example Providence in Anchorage and Mayo Clinic in Minnesota it is more about the patient and care, less about the money. Anyone that has had dealings with FMH's billing department lately will understand the frustration.

Sherry29 - no I think discussion like this is important - especially eye opening to see how much hate is in this community - a true sign of changing times.

HAte to tell ya Pavel Ist baptist of North Pole is a totally differnet denomination than the church you accuse "NP Baptists" of being "famous for". Get your facts straight before you post ignorantly.

Pavel - bet you never heard Johnny preach - bet you don't have the guts to listen either - if you do - tune in to AM 1170 Sunday at 11AM and you will hear the reality of what he preaches - or tune into TV Channel 4 Saturday evening at 7PM and see for yourself. It is the furthest thing from hate and intolernace. Better yet if you really have guts call the church and make an appointment to talk to Johnny face to face and you will see the true measure of this man. You may have hate for him and you don't even know him, but he will show nothing but love and care and concern for you. And before you even say anything about me - I don't go to his church, but I do know him and I count myself a better person because I do. And for those that have expressed concern and prayers for my wife - THANKS so much. We will take all we can get.

I sure haven't seen this much hate posted in the comments of an article in a long time. Course those that spew hat DO NOT know the facts or the truth. yes there aer some pastors in this town and eslwehre lving extravagant liefstyles but NOT Pastor Johnny and Patty. Pastor McCoy and Patty scrimped and saved a long time for their home - is not a church home but their own personal home. Also, Johnny served honarably in the Air Force and Air National Guard from which he retired from. So as far as income that he does not have to pay taxes on you are off base - He pays taxes on his retirement just like the rest of us military retirees. Johnny also served as N.P. City councilman and Mayor and also serves as Chaplain for the North Pole Fire Department. He has dedicated his life to serving hothers so yes he does deserve a nice house for he and hisfamily to live in. And to set the record staight - why spew hate - if your house burned down folks in this community would not condemn or attack you - they would help and be concered about you and care. Also - you don't understand the concept of God's love or God's strength and peace - it is what sustains many of us through the good and the bad. My wife has been in Anchorage undergoing cancer treatments for 8 months and still has a long way to go before we can bring her home - It is God's peace, love and strength that has sustained us. For those postors here that may be angry at God, or have no use for Him...Guess what? He's not angry at you and He has use for you. To Johnny and Patty - you guys are the greatest and we love ya bunches and bunches. And to those nasty ol' postors - if your house burns down - we of this community will be there to help ya too.

Dr. Muldoon - you and many others sure don't know what many state employees do. And there are many that will be working that day anyway - 911 dispatchers, troopers, airport police, corrections officers, medical staff in the Pioneers Home, etc. I'm tired of state employees being the "whipping post" for a lot of people. To blame and attack state employees for what they do and how good they do their jobs is just downright ignorant. And the reality is most of us could make a heck of a lot more money in the private sector, but we realize the importance of our jobs and the services we provide to the great folks in the great state of Alaska.

Homer - you are generalizing - not all state workers do the jobs you accuse them of doing - there are police officers, corrections officers, airport operations staff, design engineers, 911 dispatchers, and many many other jobs you and others are not aware of.

For the critics - not all state workers work a 7.5 hour week, and not all of us will have the extra day off - yes I will get an extra day of leave for working the "off". And also for the critics - I'm working Christmas and worked Thanksgiving - did you get to spend it with your family? I didn't - now don't think I am complaining; I love my job and I love being of service to the citizens of the great state of Alaska - and for you folks whining about us over paid state employees - let me tell you. Some; like myself could get jobs for a lot more money than the state pays But many of do it because we love the job an care about the folks we serve.

Taters - while many of the folks at FMH are true caring professionals, my experience, especially from the E.R. is the exact opposite. I once was a critical care tech at a Humana hospital in Floride. When I got hired I was told my primary purpose was to make money for the corporation. I asked what about quality health care and was promptly told that was secondary and that seems to be the attitude especially at FMH's E.R. Last year, 3 times in one week my wife was brought into the e.r. there by ambulance for being light headed and short of breath. Each time the e.r. doc wouldn't release her without doing a full cardiac workup including stress tests - very expensive procedures that were not needed - finally when it happened again I convinced the ambulance crew to take her to Bassett and the fantastic doctors there diognosed here problems with a few simple blood tests. We made quite a lot of money for FMH that week. As far as the level of care there and the confidence I have in the faciltiy - well I have had my wife at the Providence Cancer Center and Alaska Regional Hospital for 9 months as I have absolutely no confidence in FMH. I should state though that the technicians and admin staff I have dealt with are nothing but true caring profesionals. Bottom line - if I can get quality medical care (to include imaging) done by just as qualifed staff but for a lot less money - I have to go where I can save money. The CON limits my choices and does nothing but protect FMH's hold on the community. Ther eare alot of folks that need a choice when it comes to health care. It troubles me that there are alot of folks in this community that need a more cost effective option.
