Blog: Election 2008
Who knew a secret ballot would be so secret?
I'm here at Pike's Landing Hotel, one of the sites for the Republican preference poll, and while the line to the polls has nearly stretched out the door at times, few people are willing to talk to a reporter about their choice for president.
But of those who are talking, it seems like there's only one clear choice: Mitt Romney.
Of the handful of people who will talk about the way they're voting, they're all choosing the former governor of Massachusetts, and they all say it's because he seems to be the most conservative.
People are also talking about Arizona Sen. John McCain though, but not in a good way. Voters seem scared that he's too liberal, and since he hasn't campaigned in the state, it seems he's done little to change that view. McCain might get the majority of delegates tonight, but it doesn't look like he will fare well in the Last Frontier.
The other two candidates for the GOP nomination don't even seem to be registering on people's radars. I haven't heard a peep about ex-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and while there are people here campaigning for Texas Rep. Ron Paul, no one seems to actually be voting for him.
When I told one of the Paul campaigners people here seemed to be voting Romney, he muttered something about national ID cards and walked away.
