Blog: Offbeat Fairbanks

Fairbanks is off to the races

Published Friday, October 24, 2008

If I were a betting woman, I'd put my money on Fairbanks, assuming I had any money, which I don't.

Yes, this definitely is off my normal offbeat Fairbanks, Alaska, beat, but it's fun just the same.

I keep getting horse racing news in my Google alerts (I generally lean toward sled dog sports) and I finally opened a couple of stories to find out what all the hullabaloo is about. Seems a horse named Fairbanks is the No. 4 favorite in the Breeder's Cup on Saturday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

Fairbanks' odds are 10-1 in a 12-horse field running the $5 million classic, according to the Youngstown (Ohio) Vindicator. http://www.vindy.com/news/2008/oct/24/zoldan8217s-fairbanks-set-in-breeders8217/

The Web site The Spread makes those odds a little longer, at 25-1. http://www.thespread.com/sports-betting-top-stories-900/fairbanks-listed-with-long-odds-to-win-the-breeders-cup-at.html

Fairbanks is trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by a consortium called Team Valor. He's supposed to be a fast horse on a short track. Whatever. I like the horse's name. http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/breeders-cup/contender-detail.aspx?id=marathon&contenderno=673

Fairbanks finished 10th in the Breeder's Cup. Oh well.
